Dear HPC users of LRZ,

We want to draw your attention to the following upcoming HPC training events:

Online Course Supercomputing

Today’s supercomputers are the most powerful calculating machines ever invented, capable of performing more than a thousand million million calculations every second. This gives scientists and engineers a powerful new tool to study the natural world - computer simulation.

This free 5-week online course will introduce you to what supercomputers are, how they are used and how we can exploit their full computational potential to make scientific breakthroughs.

This course was developed by EPCC at the University of Edinburgh and by SURFsara as part of the EC-funded PRACE project.

Register for the upcoming run on 15th January at www.futurelearn.com/courses/supercomputing/ .

PRACE Summer of HPC 2018

Early-stage postgraduate and late-stage undergraduate students are invited to apply for the PRACE Summer of HPC 2018 programme, to be held in July & August 2018. Consisting of a training week and two months on placement at top HPC centres around Europe, the programme offers participants the opportunity to learn and share more about PRACE and HPC, and includes accommodation, a stipend and travel to their HPC centre. Applications open 11 January 2018.

Programming the new KNL Cluster at LRZ

Recently LRZ has started operation of the new 394 TFlop/s CooLMUC3 Cluster with 64-way Intel Knights Landing (KNL) 7210-F many-core processors and Intel Omnipath interconnect.

See https://www.lrz.de/services/compute/linux-cluster/coolmuc3/ for a description of the system.

CoolMUC-3 users in particular, but also all HPC users interested in the Intel Knights Landing many-core processor and the Intel Many Integrated Core (MIC) architecture in general, are encouraged to join the course.
