Volkswagen Foundation Pioneer Project

We're hiring!

To co-lead the implementation of the innovative programs of the VW foundation's project “From local to systemic implementation: Embedding open research in institutional practices” the OSC is seeking to fill a full-time or two part-time temporary position(s) from 1st January 2025 to 31st December 2027, as a Scientific Coordinator for Open Science.

For a more detailed description of the job position visit:

The deadline for application is July 15. Please share widely!

VW Foundation Grant

This VW project aims to transform scientific practices from the ground up, as described in the official press release of the LMU. It will consist of two programs:

Switch-to-Open program

We will support research groups desiring to switch from closed to open research workflows by creating, together with them, a standard open research practice guide adapted to their needs. The guide will be useful for onboarding new members and adaptable by other groups in the same department. If you are interested in benefiting from this service already this year, please contact Malika at malika.ihle@lmu.de.

Train-the-Trainer program

We will empower researchers to become trainers of open research practices to increase the adoption of these standards in their discipline.

LMU-MPG Open Science Summer School 09. - 13.09.2024

We are collaborating with the Max Planck Digital Library to host a hybrid Open Science Summer School. This 5-day event offers a rich program of lectures and workshops centered around open science designed to help early-career researchers build greater confidence in their work and enhance its credibility. Check the full programme on the website of the summer school!

Apply before July 15 to take part in the whole summer school. Register at any time to attend one, multiple, or all public lectures online.

First Advisory Board meeting

We held our first advisory board meeting on April 29 with

They report: "The LMU Open Science Center shows impressive achievements for a grassroot initiative and contributes greatly to the LMU research environment and its reputation. To build on this strength, the LMU now has the opportunity to anchor this researcher-led initiative into an institutional strategy to achieve excellence at scale."

META-REP Conference 28.-31.10.2024

The DFG-funded META-REP consortium organizes a conference on  replicability, reproducibility, research validity and strategies for enhancing the robustness of research in social, behavioral and cognitive sciences from 28-31.10.2024 in Munich. Learn more

Interview about transparency in science

Two of our members, Prof. Dr. Mario Gollwitzer and Dr. Andreas Schneck, were interviewed about the challenges of replicating scientific studies, particularly in psychology. For more details, you can read the full interview on the LMU website:

Issue about  “Reproducibility and Replication in Research Communication”

Our member Prof. Dr. Mario Haim co-edits an issue about “Reproducibility and Replication in Research Communication” on Cogitatio Press. It features a collection of articles that address methods and strategies to ensure the replicability of research results and the impacts of replication studies on the field.

Education Paper on teaching concept about replicable research practice

Three of our members, Dr. Max Mandl, Dr. Sabine Hoffmann and Prof. Dr. Anne-Laure Boulesteix, are co-authors of the paper "Raising awareness of uncertain choices in empirical data analysis: A teaching concept toward replicable research practices" published in PLOS Computational Biology. The article presents a teaching concept to help students recognize the impact of their analytical choices and learn strategies to handle these choices transparently.

Sharing insights on social media

We plan to share our members’ perspectives and experiences with open science on social media. If you’re keen to share your views, we invite you to contribute. Your insights will be featured across LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon. Interested? Please get in touch at gracia.pruem@campus.lmu.de.
