  Feierliche Inbetriebnahme der Phase 2 des SuperMUC am LRZ

Am Montag, den 29. Juni 2015, wurde am Leibniz-Rechenzentrum die 
Inbetriebnahme der Phase 2 des Höchstleistungsrechners "SuperMUC" 
gefeiert. Der Bayerische Rundfunk berichtete

Mit dem Drücken des roten Knopfes im Rechnergebäude des LRZ nahmen Dr. 
Ludwig Spaenle, Bayerischer Staatsminister für Bildung und Kultus, 
Wissenschaft und Kunst , Stefan Müller, Parlamentarischer Staatssekretär 
bei der Bundesministerin für Bildung und Forschung, Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz 
Hoffmann, Präsident der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Prof. 
Dr. Arndt Bode, Vorsitzender des Direktoriums des LRZ der BAdW, Martina 
Koederitz, Vorsitzende der Geschäftsführung der IBM Deutschland GmbH, 
und Christian Teismann, Vice President and General Manager, Global 
Account Business Lenovo, die wie geplant in einer Phase 2 installierte 
Erweiterung des SuperMUC am LRZ auf die doppelte Leistung in Betrieb.

On June 29th, 2015, the expansion of High Performance Computer SuperMUC 
was officially put into operation during an opening ceremony at the 
Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) of the 
Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Garching near Munich. 
"SuperMUC Phase 2" provides an additional peak performance of 3.6 
Petaflops to the previously available 3.2 Petaflops, pushing the maximum 
theoretical computing power of SuperMUC to now 6.8 Petaflops (6.8 
quadrillion floating point operations per second).

The festive inauguration of "SuperMuc Phase 2" was kicked off by a 
symbolic act: Dr. Ludwig Spaenle, Minister of Science of the Free State 
of Bavaria, /Stefan Müller/, Parliamentary State Secretary to the 
Federal Minister of Education and Research, Karl-Heinz Hoffmann, 
President of the Academy, Prof. Dr. Arndt Bode, Director of the LRZ, 
Martina Koederitz, General Manager of IBM Germany, and Christian 
Teismann, Vice President and General Manager, Global Account Business 
Levono, jointly pressed the "Red Button" symbolizing the start-up of the 
system expansion to HPC system SuperMUC.
