Quantum Information Theory Reading Group at LMU
Dear all, the Summer 2014 reading group on Quantum Information Theory will begin this coming Monday, April 14th, from 18:00 - 20:00 (CT). After that we will meet bi-weekly. The location is Ludwigstraße 31, Room 021. The first part of the meeting on Monday will be devoted to organisational matters and to discussing subsequent meeting topics. During the second part of the meeting, *Seamus Bradley* will introduce us to *Classical Information Theory*. As background reading, you may want to look at Parts I and II of Claude Shannon's "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" (1948). It can be downloaded from: http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/ms/what/shannonday/shannon1948.pdf Everyone interested in the topic of quantum information theory is encouraged to attend the group. Please also feel free to distribute this to anyone not subscribed to this mailing list who you think may be interested in attending. If you are receiving this email twice because you belong to this mailing list but are explicitly included in the Cc list, please let me know and I will remove you from the latter. I hope to see many of you next week. Best wishes, -- Michael Cuffaro Postdoctoral Fellow Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Fakultät für Philosophie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Religionswissenschaft Lehrstuhl für Wissenschaftstheorie Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1 80539 München, Deutschland http://www.michaelcuffaro.com
Dear all, this is just a reminder that the first meeting of the Summer 2014 reading group on Quantum Information Theory is tonight (Monday) from 18:00 - 20:00 (the time is "CT", i.e., actually from 18:15 - 19:45). The location of the meeting is Ludwigstraße 31, Room 021. The first part of the meeting will be devoted to organisational matters and to discussing subsequent meeting topics. Dear all, the next meeting of the Summer 2014 reading group on Quantum Information Theory will take place on Monday, April 28 from 18:00 - 20:00 (the time is "CT", i.e., actually from 18:15 - 19:45). The location of the meeting will be Ludwigstraße 31, Room 021. In the meeting I will start by briefly reviewing the basics of linear algebra and the quantum mechanical formalism, and then move on to discuss the von Neumann entropy and the basics of quantum information theory. The relevant readings are Chapters 2, 11, and 12 of Nielsen & Chuang (2000). I will not be talking much about the material in chapters 8-10, but reading these may be helpful when we move on to more advanced topics later on in the semester. The dropbox folder for the group is accessible via this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/x2rwmqqspfvmpaz/ikeZfpsGIW I hope to see many of you there. Dear all, the next meeting of the Summer 2014 reading group on Quantum Information Theory will take place in approximately two weeks, on Monday, May 12 2014 from 18:00 - 20:00 (note that the time is "CT", i.e., actually from 18:15 - 19:45). The location of the meeting will be Ludwigstraße 31, Room 021. Cameron Beebe will be leading discussion on selections of Chris Timpson's book: "Quantum Information Theory and the Foundations of Quantum Mechanics." We will be discussing Timpson's philosophical explications of the concepts of classical and quantum information, respectively. The reading is posted online here (in the "Week 3" folder): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/x2rwmqqspfvmpaz/ikeZfpsGIW Note that we will focus specifically on: pp. 10-37, 44-50, 58-73. I hope to see many of you there. Dear all, the next meeting of the Summer 2014 reading group on Quantum Information Theory will take place on Monday, May 26 2014 from 18:00 - 20:00 (note that the time is "CT", i.e., actually from 18:15 - 19:45). The location of the meeting will be Ludwigstraße 31, Room 021. During the meeting, Geza Giedke will lead our discussion on "Some Negative Remarks on Operational Approaches to Quantum Theory" by Fuchs and Stacey. The paper can be found here: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1401.7254v1 Optionally, you may also want to look at "Quantum-Bayesian Coherence: The No-Nonsense Version" by Fuchs and Schack, which can be found here: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1301.3274v1 The second paper provides some of the math to back up some of the claims made in the first. I hope to see many of you there. Dear all, I've been reminded that the reading group tomorrow (18:15-19:45) conflicts with the World Cup game between Germany and Portugal, which happens at roughly the same time. I'm not sure what can be done about it at this point, but please let me know if this will be a problem so that we can consider our options. Please reply off-list.
