*PHILOSOPHY OF QUANTUM FIELD THEORY* *XXI International Summer School in Philosophy of Physics* 25-28 June 2018, Urbino, Italy *Call for Participation* We invite participation for the XXI International Summer School in Philosophy of Physics to be held in Urbino 25th-28th June 2018. The topic of the school is “Philosophy of Quantum Field Theory” and will feature lectures given by Miklos Redei (London School of Economics and Political Science), Laura Ruetsche (University of Michigan) and Giovanni Valente (Polytechnic University of Milan); and afternoon seminars given by Elena Castellani (University of Florence), F.A. Muller (Erasmus University Rotterdam, Utrecht University), Sergio Doplicher (University of Rome La Sapienza) - see the attached program for details. It will host a limited number of students, graduate students and early researchers depending on a successful application. SECOND ANNUAL BRISTOL-MCMP WORKSHOP ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS "Problems in Classical and Quantum Statistical Mechanics" MCMP, LMU Munich 27. Jan 2018 http://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de/events/workshops/container/bris… ********************************************* Statistical mechanics plays a central in almost every field of physics: solid state, fluid mechanics, cosmology, astrophysics, the study of black holes, every major program of quantum gravity, low temperature physics, the Standard Model, experimental error analysis, and on and on. Its conceptual and foundational problems---among them, the role and interpretation of probabilities, the nature of entropy and the Second Law, the root of irreversibility, its relation to thermodynamics---are as deep and unresolved as those of any other field of physics as well. All of these are active and central areas of research in contemporary work on the foundations of physics. Indeed, in recent decades the scope of statistical mechanics has grown to encompass fundamental work in such diverse fields as economics and formal epistemology as well. This workshop will address problems pertaining to a wide spectrum of such issues with an emphasis on technical work, with the aim both of examining the problems in their own right and of investigating whether approaches and techniques from some areas can be of use in others. ********************************************* REGISTRATION: Please send registration requests by 23. Best wishes, Johannes Kleiner ******************************************************************************* *Rethinking Foundations of Physics 2018 * /Saturday March 17 - Saturday March 24 / / / Traditional conferences and subject-specific workshops offer little room for having in-depth discussions about the foundations of physics in an open, creative and speculative way. Since the first meeting in 2013, this workshop has offered a platform for engaging in such discussions. The workshop centers on discussions in small groups. The aim of these is to reveal implicit assumptions in physics, to clarify the conceptual core of its guiding ideas and to explore new ways of thinking about problems in basic research. Ideally, the workshop thus bridges the gap between deep critical thinking and creative brainstorming. To lay the ground for these sessions, there will be talks given by the participants. The following general questions convey the spirit of the workshop and may serve as guidelines for more specific subjects of the discussion sessions:  - Which mathematical, conceptual, and experimental paradigms underlie modern formulations of QM, GR, and QFT? - Can they be relaxed or changed? If so, how? - Which new mathematical developments could be relevant for future foundations? - Are there promising new or non-standard experimental possibilities? The workshop is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs in physics, mathematics and philosophy. Participants are not required to have substantial knowledge in all modern physical theories, nor do they have to be currently working on basic research questions. We look forward to applications from people who are passionate about conceptual questions, open to other fields and, most importantly, eager to engage in deep discussions. *The deadline for applications is January 14, 2018*. In light of the focus on discussions, instead of applying with an abstract for a talk centered around achieved results, applicants have to apply with a foundational question and argue why one should care about this question.
