Registration for Second Annual Bristol-MCMP Workshop on the Foundations of Physics
by Erik Curiel Jan. 10, 2018

Jan. 10, 2018

SECOND ANNUAL BRISTOL-MCMP WORKSHOP ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF PHYSICS "Problems in Classical and Quantum Statistical Mechanics" MCMP, LMU Munich 27. Jan 2018 http://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de/events/workshops/container/bris… ********************************************* Statistical mechanics plays a central in almost every field of physics: solid state, fluid mechanics, cosmology, astrophysics, the study of black holes, every major program of quantum gravity, low temperature physics, the Standard Model, experimental error analysis, and on and on. Its conceptual and foundational problems---among them, the role and interpretation of probabilities, the nature of entropy and the Second Law, the root of irreversibility, its relation to thermodynamics---are as deep and unresolved as those of any other field of physics as well. All of these are active and central areas of research in contemporary work on the foundations of physics. Indeed, in recent decades the scope of statistical mechanics has grown to encompass fundamental work in such diverse fields as economics and formal epistemology as well. This workshop will address problems pertaining to a wide spectrum of such issues with an emphasis on technical work, with the aim both of examining the problems in their own right and of investigating whether approaches and techniques from some areas can be of use in others. ********************************************* REGISTRATION: Please send registration requests by 23. Jan 2018 to the co-organizer Erik Curiel (erik.curiel(a)lmu.de) The email should have the subject: "register" . Also please indicate whether you plan to attend the conference dinner (27 Jan, 2016). There is no fee for the conference. The conference dinner is on a Dutch-treat basis. -- Erik Curiel Assistant Professor Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy Lehrstuhl für Wissenschaftstheorie Fakultät für Philosophie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Religionswissenschaft Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Ludwigstraße 31 80539 München, Deutschland BHI Research Fellow Black Hole Initiative Harvard University 20 Garden Street, 2nd Floor Cambridge, MA 02138 USA http://strangebeautiful.com

Workshop 'Rethinking Foundations of Physics 2018'
by Johannes Kleiner Jan. 10, 2018

Jan. 10, 2018

Dear colleagues, Please find below a short description of the workshop “/Rethinking Foundations of Physics 2018”/ which will be held in a beautiful setting in the Austrian Alps in March 2018. The call for applications is open until _January 14, 2018_. Detailed information on the workshop and on how to apply may be found on the website: http://rethinking-workshop.org Please feel free to pass the information on to whom it might be interesting! Best wishes, Johannes Kleiner ******************************************************************************* *Rethinking Foundations of Physics 2018 * /Saturday March 17 - Saturday March 24 / / / Traditional conferences and subject-specific workshops offer little room for having in-depth discussions about the foundations of physics in an open, creative and speculative way. Since the first meeting in 2013, this workshop has offered a platform for engaging in such discussions. The workshop centers on discussions in small groups. The aim of these is to reveal implicit assumptions in physics, to clarify the conceptual core of its guiding ideas and to explore new ways of thinking about problems in basic research. Ideally, the workshop thus bridges the gap between deep critical thinking and creative brainstorming. To lay the ground for these sessions, there will be talks given by the participants. The following general questions convey the spirit of the workshop and may serve as guidelines for more specific subjects of the discussion sessions:
- Which mathematical, conceptual, and experimental paradigms underlie modern formulations of QM, GR, and QFT? - Can they be relaxed or changed? If so, how? - Which new mathematical developments could be relevant for future foundations? - Are there promising new or non-standard experimental possibilities? The workshop is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs in physics, mathematics and philosophy. Participants are not required to have substantial knowledge in all modern physical theories, nor do they have to be currently working on basic research questions. We look forward to applications from people who are passionate about conceptual questions, open to other fields and, most importantly, eager to engage in deep discussions. *The deadline for applications is January 14, 2018*. In light of the focus on discussions, instead of applying with an abstract for a talk centered around achieved results, applicants have to apply with a foundational question and argue why one should care about this question. You may find all the details on how to apply on the website of the workshop <https://rethinking-workshop.org/>. Naturalness Workshop
by Joshua Rosaler Dec. 12, 2017

Dec. 12, 2017

Dear All, My colleagues have graciously informed me that my last e-mail reached a somewhat wider audience than anticipated. Here then, without further ado - and with apologies for clogging all of your inboxes - is the advertisement for our Aachen workshop on naturalness. Please note that the deadline for applications is Jan. 31. Very Best Wishes, Josh *Title: *Workshop on "Naturalness, Hierarchy, and Fine-Tuning" *Workshop Description:* The requirement of naturalness has long served as an influential constraint on model-building in elementary particle physics. Yet there are many ways of understanding what, precisely, this requirement amounts to, from restrictions on the amount of fine-tuning that a model can exhibit, to prohibitions on sensitive dependence between physics at different scales, to the requirement that dimensionless parameters defining the Lagrangian of a theory all be of order one unless protected by a symmetry. This workshop aims to clarify the relationships among these concepts of naturalness and their connection to the hierarchy problem, as well as to assess arguments for and against imposing various forms of naturalness as a requirement on particle physics model-building. It will bring together researchers in philosophy of physics and theoretical particle physics whose expertise touches either directly on the subject of naturalness or on closely related issues concerning effective field theory, renormalization, and the physical interpretation of quantum field theory. *Location:* RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany *Dates:* Feb. 28 - Mar. 2 *Speakers Include:* * Jonathan Bain (NYU) * Arianna Borrelli (TU Berlin) * Elena Castellani (Univ. Florence) * Richard Dawid (Univ. Stockholm) * Bertrand Delamotte (UPMC Paris) * Doreen Fraser (Univ. Waterloo) * Holger Gies (Univ. Jena) * Alexei Grinbaum (CEA-Saclay) * Arthur Hebecker (Univ. Heidelberg) * Sabine Hossenfelder (FIAS) * Fred Jegerlehner (HU Berlin) * Frank Saueressig (Univ. Nijmegen) * Mikhail Shaposhnikov (EPF Lausanne) * Michael Stoeltzner (USC) * James Wells (Univ. Michigan) * Porter Williams (Univ. Pittsburgh) *Support:* The workshop will be hosted by the Institute of Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology at RWTH Aachen University as part of the DFG research unit "The Epistemology of the Large Hadron Collider." For more information about the workshop, see https://indico.cern.ch/event/630393/. For information about the Epistemology of the LHC collaboration, see http://www.lhc-epistemologie.uni-wuppertal.de/ *Application:* (Deadline Jan. 31) Those interested in attending the workshop are asked to submit a brief description of their academic background and interest in the subject of the workshop via the following link: https://indico.cern.ch/event/630393/registrations/38431/ *Organization:* Robert Harlander, Gregor Schiemann, Joshua Rosaler, Miguel Angel Carretero Sahuquillo *Contact: %2Arosaler(a)physik.rwth-aachen.de (Joshua Rosaler), harlander(a)physik.rwth-aachen.de (Robert Harlander)
