Irvine-Munich-PoliMi-Salzburg Network The Irvine-Munich-PoliMi-Salzburg network in philosophy and foundations of physics aims at fostering the collaboration between faculty, researchers and students based in the Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science at the University of California Irvine, the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, the Department of Mathematics and the META group at the Politecnico di Milano, and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Salzburg. The activities of the network include the circulation of scholars among the four schools, as well as the organization of regular workshops on dedicated topics and an annual international conference for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Throughout the joint application for external funding it also promotes the career development of young researchers coming from all around the world. Jan 2018 http://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de/events/workshops/container/bris… ********************************************* Statistical mechanics plays a central in almost every field of physics: solid state, fluid mechanics, cosmology, astrophysics, the study of black holes, every major program of quantum gravity, low temperature physics, the Standard Model, experimental error analysis, and on and on. Its conceptual and foundational problems---among them, the role and interpretation of probabilities, the nature of entropy and the Second Law, the root of irreversibility, its relation to thermodynamics---are as deep and unresolved as those of any other field of physics as well. All of these are active and central areas of research in contemporary work on the foundations of physics. Indeed, in recent decades the scope of statistical mechanics has grown to encompass fundamental work in such diverse fields as economics and formal epistemology as well. Best wishes, Johannes Kleiner ******************************************************************************* *Rethinking Foundations of Physics 2018 * /Saturday March 17 - Saturday March 24 / / / Traditional conferences and subject-specific workshops offer little room for having in-depth discussions about the foundations of physics in an open, creative and speculative way. Since the first meeting in 2013, this workshop has offered a platform for engaging in such discussions. The workshop centers on discussions in small groups. The aim of these is to reveal implicit assumptions in physics, to clarify the conceptual core of its guiding ideas and to explore new ways of thinking about problems in basic research. Ideally, the workshop thus bridges the gap between deep critical thinking and creative brainstorming. To lay the ground for these sessions, there will be talks given by the participants. The following general questions convey the spirit of the workshop and may serve as guidelines for more specific subjects of the discussion sessions:  - Which mathematical, conceptual, and experimental paradigms underlie modern formulations of QM, GR, and QFT? - Can they be relaxed or changed? If so, how? - Which new mathematical developments could be relevant for future foundations? - Are there promising new or non-standard experimental possibilities? The workshop is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs in physics, mathematics and philosophy. Participants are not required to have substantial knowledge in all modern physical theories, nor do they have to be currently working on basic research questions. We look forward to applications from people who are passionate about conceptual questions, open to other fields and, most importantly, eager to engage in deep discussions. *The deadline for applications is January 14, 2018*. In light of the focus on discussions, instead of applying with an abstract for a talk centered around achieved results, applicants have to apply with a foundational question and argue why one should care about this question. Very Best Wishes, Josh *Title: *Workshop on "Naturalness, Hierarchy, and Fine-Tuning" *Workshop Description:* The requirement of naturalness has long served as an influential constraint on model-building in elementary particle physics. Yet there are many ways of understanding what, precisely, this requirement amounts to, from restrictions on the amount of fine-tuning that a model can exhibit, to prohibitions on sensitive dependence between physics at different scales, to the requirement that dimensionless parameters defining the Lagrangian of a theory all be of order one unless protected by a symmetry. This workshop aims to clarify the relationships among these concepts of naturalness and their connection to the hierarchy problem, as well as to assess arguments for and against imposing various forms of naturalness as a requirement on particle physics model-building.
