Examples include using quantum-mechanical systems to perform computations and transmit information; the use of information-theoretic concepts to characterize gravitational phenomena, such as black holes; informational axiomatizations and interpretations of quantum theory; and many others. The goal of this Special Issue is to provide an interdisciplinary snapshot of the foundational and philosophical research at the cutting edge of this important area of physics. The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy invites registration for the following event: Global Structure in Semi-Classical Gravity MCMP, LMU Munich 21-23 July 2022 https://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de/events/workshops/container/scg… ********************************************* Semi-classical gravity (SCG)---the coupling of the dynamics of quantum fields to the classical spacetime geometry of general relativity by way of the semi-classical Einstein field equation (SCEFE)---is the framework within which black hole thermodynamics is formulated. As such, it is widely held to provide the most secure theoretical clues to a search for a theory of quantum gravity. Considered in its own right, however, it already presents us with a plethora of foundational and conceptual problems that require investigation, even over and above the most famous one, Hawking's Information-Loss Paradox. - In what sense is it legitimate to think of black holes as thermodynamical systems? - What is the causal structure of an evaporating black hole spacetime, and its relation to causality conditions on quantum fields? - What is black hole entropy? - How does the Generalized Second Law ramify into the host of other problems of fundamental physical and philosophical import that the ordinary Second Law of thermodynamics does? - What is the difference between geometry and matter? - Are there singularities in the semi-classical regime, and does a form of cosmic censorship hold in it? - What role do classical energy conditions and quantum energy inequalities play, and how do they relate to entropy and information? - What is holography at the semi-classical level, and what role can or does it play there? - What can the epistemology of a field of physics be, completely divorced from experimentation and observation? This will be the first major conference to address foundational and philosophical issues associated with SCG, and to try to examine how they all bear on each other. Invited physicists and philosophers have been chosen to represent different approaches to SCG and the many different kinds of conceptual questions it poses (quantum field theory on curved spacetime, emergent gravity, canonical gravity, holography, phenomenology, methodology, epistemology), in an attempt to foster a dialogue among the different fields. Contributed talks from both physicists and philosophers will be chosen so as to complement the perspectives of the invited speakers. Such a gathering will spur new, innovative approaches to the problem, as well as connecting and invigorating work on existing approaches. Dear all, following the tradition of our International Network, we are happy to now invite you to the Eighth Edition of the International Workshop on Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Information in 2022, to be held online on April 27 and 28, and May 4 and 5. The selected theme for this edition is: “Quantum Theory and Reality”. Quantum theory is the perfect case study for the realist vs anti-realist debate: on the one hand, one naturally considers the theory as an approximate true description of reality; on the other hand, the ever-growing number of interpretations/quantum theories seem to plague QM’s access to reality with underdetermination. We would like to pursue new perspectives on such a traditional debate on the philosophy of science. Contributions to the workshop address the following questions, but, as in previous editions of the workshop, are not limited to: - Is there a clear dividing line between ‘theory’ and ‘interpretation’ in the case of QM? - What does it mean to take QM to be ‘approximately true’? - Are there new experimental perspectives that could falsify one interpretation/quantum theory? - Can theoretical virtues (epistemic/ontological/metaphysical) favor one interpretation/theory over other(s)? - Are there new stances that steer a middle ground between realism and anti-realism? - What does it mean to adopt a realist stance toward quantum mechanics? - Could numerous quantum theories/interpretations, instead of blocking one’s road to reality, enhance one’s understanding of reality? "Beyond Models" Workshop on Philosophy of Model Independence-Call for Posters FINAL

We are inviting contributions for the virtual poster session of the philosophy of physics workshop /Beyond Models/, taking place on June 14-15, 2022, at the University of Bonn in Bonn, Germany. We are asking for 10 min (8+2) `poster-style' presentations on the topics related to the philosophy of model independence in physics. The lack of new physics discoveries at the LHC has had many significant effects on the field of particle physics. It has led to the re-evaluation of guiding principles such as naturalness, a decrease in the popularity of prominent models, such as supersymmetry, and an increase in model independent (MI) search methods. These MI methods aim at reducing BSM model dependence in a variety of ways and may include using bottom-up EFTs, using signature-based, rather than model-based, searches, performing SM precision measurements, or using unsupervised deep learning to let experimental data speak for itself as much as possible. The workshop will bring together experimental and theoretical physicists and philosophers of science to explore various aspects of this shift towards model-independent strategies, the tools they employ, as well as the methodological and epistemic issues they bring. We may examine questions such as: * what is model independence?
