Le GDR "Diplomatique": le site web

Chers collègues, Permettez-moi de vous annoncer la publication du site web collaboratif du Groupement de recherches (GDR) "Diplomatique" (CNRS), né voici quelques mois, avec pour objectif de réunir les principaux acteurs français (puis européens) en diplomatique médiévale, discipline en plein essor et renouvellement. Il s'agit donc de promouvoir les recherches communes autour de la diplomatique et des pratiques de l'écrit "documentaire". Dans le cadre des activités de ce GDR, pour mieux fédérer les recherches et donner plus de visibilité encore aux travaux que nous menons tous en ce sens, un site web collaboratif a été monté et est aujourd'hui publié, sous le titre évocateur "de rebus diplomaticis": http://www.gdr-diplomatique.net On y trouvera des informations sur le GDR lui-même et ses projets, mais aussi d'autres projets de recherches connexes non spécifiquement liés au GDR mais attachés à la diplomatique. On y fera le point aussi sur les manifestations, colloques, conférences qui touchent à la diplomatique, qu'elles soient le fait du GDR ou non, de même que sur les publications, numériques ou traditionnelles, concernant la diplomatique (appels à contributions, annonces de publications, recensions, bibliographies...). Ce site veut donc être une sorte d'intermédiaire pour les chercheurs intéressés aux pratiques de l'écrit documentaire et à la diplomatique: une partie "carnet de recherche" ou informations ponctuelles se trouvera en première page du site, les publiant par ordre chronologique décroissant selon l'arrivée (les informations les plus récentes en tête du site). Dans tous les cas, il sera possible à tout chercheur de proposer des commentaires à chacune des "brèves" ainsi publiées, ainsi que l'on procède dans les 'blogs'. Un forum complètera le site pour les données de détail: dates et lieux pour séminaires et conférences, changements de programmes de colloques, détails de dernière minute pour des réunions, questions ponctuelles scientifiques (références bibliographiques, problèmes de cotes d'archives...)... Chacun des membres du GDR peut participer à la publication d'informations sur ce site en s'inscrivant via la colonne de droite "create my account". La possibilité de participation au site de manière collaborative est largement encouragée: si des chercheurs intéressés veulent participer, même s'ils ne font pas d'emblée partie du GDR, qu'ils n'hésitent pas à se manifester et à demander à s'inscrire pour publier des informations. L'interface du site est encore actuellement en anglais: une traduction française sera mise en place dès que possible. Dear colleagues, as there weren't any new suggestions to the diplomatic discourse section I would like to open the discussion for the next facet, we called in spring not very convincing "Philology" adressing principally the questions of critical edition. The most part of our elements in http://www.cei.lmu.de/facetedview.php?facetID=65 are borrowed from the TEI. If I'm right only <traditioForm> is not really covered by the TEI. I would suggest to follow Lucianas proposal to change the name to "transmission" and would propose myself to add as childs transmissionStatus (i.e. original, copy, authenticated copy etc.), transmissionResp for the person - if known - who is responsible for the copy etc. and transmissionDate as we already introduced in the chronology facet. Dear colleagues, although I set beginning of June as a deadline for the discussion of the diplomatic discourse concepts in the CEI tag list I would like to pick up the issue. Our colleagues from Toronto have recently provided me with a list of parts of the diplomatic discourse they use for analysing high medieval english private charters. I have tried to integrat these into the tag list and summed it up in a facet of its own (DEEDS) although the elements all appear in the facet "diplomatic discourse" too. Their list contains several terms that may be too specific to use them as own elements, but as the CEI first task is to provide a proposal for semantics I don't see any problem to keep all the names as they could be used for type-attribute values too. But I'm curious what you think. Do you have proposals for better terms? Do you miss still elements of the diplomatic discourse that could be adressed via markup? While compiling the list I got into a problem I would be happy to have it discussed by all the diplomatic scholars subscribed to this list: The DEEDS-Project distinguishes between "issuer" and the "person acting". In charters issued by kings, popes etc. and in the tradition of the "charta" both roles seem to coincide. But am I right that it can be a concept to distinguish between the issuing notary and the persons juridically acting in an notarial instrument? Or would you propose other names and concepts to keep both case together where they are the same, and apart where they aren't? Collecting further tags

Dear colleagues, a bit of time has gone by since the meeting in Munich. During this time I have written down the minutes of the CEI-Meeting on Saturday 3rd of March that I attach to this mail. At the meeting we decided to continue the further development on the data model for encoding charters via this list. Everybody is invited and encouraged to send his ideas and proposals to the list or to me personally. I will keep track of the incoming mails and put your comments into the database of elements at http://www.cei.lmu.de/facetedview.php. At the meeting we built some “aspects”/”facets” of the description of medieval and early modern instruments to keep the overview. After collecting concepts of the description of the chronology of the charters in Munich I would now suggest that we continue the work with an “online-brainstorming” for elements that are necessary to describe the diplomatic discourse (cfr. http://www.cei.lmu.de/facetedview.php?facetID=61) I propose to switch to another facet with beginning June, although I definitively don’t want to exclude any proposal fitting into other facets before that date. At the Internazional Conference "Old Archives - New Technologies", in Vienna-Göttweig, 19-21 Ottobre 2005, I tried to give a very simple definition of charter, i.e. « A long lasting document with legal value ». So, concerning the very interesting Duranti-Vogeler discussion, in the "formal" (Georg) aspects I would include durability of the material support (parchment). To me, a charter is not an abstract thing that has physical manifestations: it is an object with a physical form and a linguistic-legal content, that we can - of course - consider in an abstract way. As Patrich Sahe pointed out, this content can be the same in different copies/versions, which can be represented in a one-to-many relationship, or also may have variations, and this variations of content may also have different copies/versions, and this more complez situation can be represented in a many-to-many relationship. I will not enter in the problem of the best metadata set for charters as I am an archivist, and I am not at all expert of diplomatics, but I see no reason why the same item should not be described in a lot of different ways: the archival one, the diplomatist including the CEI initiative, Dublin Core, CIDOC, etc. Remember that the archival ISAD (G) standard "contains general rules for archival description that may be applied irrespective of the form or medium of the archival material. The rules contained in this standard do not give guidance on the description of special materials such as seals, sound recordings, or maps. Manuals setting out descriptive rules for such materials already exist. This standard should be used in conjunction with these manuals to enable appropriate description of special materials" (ISAD-G, Introduction, 1.4, available at: http://www.ica.org/biblio.php?pdocid=1) So my proposal is to link the digital object to any possible description - but to keep the description outside, externally. If we agree simply on an administrative-managing metadata framework like METS, we will be able to manage the same digital and choose any different descriptive metadata set we need. Experiment with CEI.dtd

Hello, I tried to use CEI DTD available on CEI website, but I didn't success to use it. I think there is a problem in DTD file. I use XML oxygen, this software shows available elements in a node and <text> and <charter> elements aren't available in <CEI> root element. Evidently, if I use this element, I can't validate my XML file. So I can't use it and study the hierarchical structure (or i don't understand). Georg, can you explain the structure you thought ? Or can you classify different elements you propose in tag library ? Thank you. Best wishes Gautier
