Dear OSC mailing list, please see this announcement for a conference and summer school in Ancona, co-organized by our OSC member Barbara Osimani: --- ## Call for Papers: Bayes By the Sea: “Formal Epistemology, Statistics, and Game Theory”, Ancona, The Marche –Italy, 30-31 August 2019. Recent proposals for scientific reform highlight the need to develop an integrated approach towards scientific methodology, which accounts for the interaction of foundational, pragmatic, and strategic dimensions of evidence evaluation. The second edition of the Bayes By the Sea conference: “Formal Epistemology, Statistics, and Game Theory” aims to bring together philosophers of statistics and of the scientific method, methodologists and metascientists, as well as economists and game-theorists, in order to refresh the debate on the foundations of the sciences from new perspectives, with a special focus on scientific rationality, scientific misconduct, science economics, foundations of statistics and the scientific method, in diverse scientific ecosystems characterized by distinctive practices, structures, and institutions. A special attention will be devoted this year also to formal/conceptual tools of game theory/rational choice theory in representing and studying the interactions of agents operating in scientific ecosystems as strategic behavior of rational players, whose repeated interactions shape the current scientific practices. We greatly enjoyed our conference last year (2018 Edition) and we look forward to a similar success this year! --- ##Summer School: Bayes By the Sea: “Formal Epistemology, Statistics, and Game Theory: The Summer School!”, Ancona, The Marche –Italy, 25 August -1 September 2019. The School aims to bring together international experts in such fields as philosophy of statistics, philosophy of science, game theory and social epistemology in order to address foundational questions in the sciences from new perspectives, with a special focus on formal models of social interactions and scientific inference. In particular, students will attend to both theoretical lectures held by distinguished scholars in the fields and classes offering tutorials on formal methods and tools, as well as extensive overviews on the school related topics. Each of the school threads will be covered by interactive group work, excercises and one-to-one sessions, which will provide attendees with the opportunity to deepen their proficiency in a particular topic of interest. In-depth lectures will be given on: Bayesian Philosophy of Science, Foundations of Statistics, Bayesian Statistics, Social Epistemology, Epistemic Game Theory, and Game-Theoretic Probability. The summer school is organized by the QUEST Center and University of Oxford's Robust Research Initiative, will be conducted in collaboration with Freie Universität Berlin and Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and is supported by the Berlin University Alliance Oxford-Berlin partnership fund. The number of places is limited and PhD and postdoctoral researchers are eligible to apply until July 1st 2019. With kind regards, Verena Heise, Dirk Ostwald, and Ulf Toelch ----- ##Background Transparency and reproducibility of research methods and results are important hallmarks of high-quality research in areas from biomedical to social and physical sciences. In the last few years, many novel, often web-based tools and technologies have emerged that allow for a comprehensive representation of the scientific process that goes far beyond descriptions of research methods and results as found in traditional journal articles. These novel tools and technologies have the potential to revolutionise the way research methods and results are communicated and facilitate research collaborations and sharing of research data in an unprecedented manner. However, using these novel tools and technologies in a qualified and responsible manner requires knowledge and skills are not normally taught in undergraduate or graduate degrees. To close this gap, we offer a five-day summer school to guide early career researchers (PhD students and postdocs) towards an open, transparent, and reproducible research workflow. These topics will be embedded in a more general curriculum on research ethics and stakeholder involvement. ##Program The five-day summer school will consist of a series of lectures that cover the following topics: * Preregistration and registered reports, biases in research * Reproducible workflows * Statistics and reproducibility * Publishing, Open Data and Open Materials * Meta-research * Ethics of reproducible research * Citizen science The lectures will be complemented by interactive workshops that participants can choose based on their research interests. Workshops topics are very diverse and range from workshops aimed at specific research areas (e.g. neuroimaging or preclinical biomedical research) to more general workshops (e.g. introduction to R, Jupyter notebooks and python visualisation). Beyond the lectures and workshops, participants will work, under supervision of the lecturers, on plans for their own projects to increase reproducibility and openness in their current or upcoming research project. ##Application Interested participants should send a letter of motivation (300 words), a project outline (300 words) and a short CV (2-3 pages). The letter of motivation should contain a brief statement how the applicant has applied or intends to apply open research practices in their current work, if any other courses were attended, and what particular challenges were encountered in their work that this summer school addresses. The project outline should give a brief overview of future or recently started research projects, in which participants would like to apply open/ reproducible research practices. Applicants with projects in any area of empirical research are encouraged to apply. If applicants are accepted, we require a signed form from the applicant’s supervisor to show that they will support the use of transparent and reproducible practices in the applicant’s research project. We have secured bed and breakfast accommodation with en-suite facilities at St Anne’s College for £92 per night for participants who require accommodation. We are able to support travel costs for a limited number of applicants with up to 500 Euro if applicants cannot cover the costs from their own funding. For participants from Charité - Universitätsmedizin, the QUEST Center for Transforming Biomedical Research will support travel and accommodation with up to 750 Euro for a limited number of participants. Dear all, we are glad to welcome Lars Vilhuber, Executive Director of the Labor Dynamics Institute at Cornell University & AEA Data Editor (https://www.vilhuber.com/lars) to LMU Munich. He will talk about **"Replication and Reproducibility in Social Sciences and Statistics: Context, Concerns, and Concrete Measures"** (see abstract below). Nevertheless, especially in the social sciences this “data work” is most often not directly subject to the scientific quality control, namely the review process of scholarly articles before publication. (How) Has this contributed to the so-called "replication crisis", i.e. the fact that a lot of scientific findings cannot be reproduced? But what is replication and reproducibility? Is it really a crisis and if yes, how bad is it? How can the situation be improved and who can do it? Statistical Reasoning and Scientific Error Conference: July 1-4, LMU Munich

# Statistical Reasoning and Scientific Error Statistical reasoning pervades experimental research, but how to apply it is a longstanding issue of debate in philosophy and science. Recent studies that reveal a high prevalence of error and lack of reproducibility in published research highlight the urgency of developing sound foundations of statistical reasoning, and finding techniques for detecting and correcting scientific error. So much the more as scientific error undermines the epistemic authority of science, and the degree to which policy-makers trust scientific experts. The conference brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers interested in issues of statistical reasoning and scientific error. It focuses on the foundations of statistical inference, how statistical reasoning is applied in the sciences, how statistical inference can correct scientific error and which proposals for reforming scientific method (including restructuring the peer review and publication system) can increase the reliability of published research. **The conference takes place from July 1 to 4 at LMU Munich. Attendance is open to anyone, provided you register in advance.
