Hybrid Symposium: Reforming Research Assessment, March 13, 14:30 - 16:30 s.t.
by LMU Open Science Center News Feb. 2, 2023

Feb. 2, 2023

Dear researchers from any disciplines and career stages, research support staff, and research administrators, You, and people from your networks, are invited to attend and contribute to the discussions of this hybrid symposium: Reforming Research Assessment: how to implement responsible procedures and move beyond impact factors and h-index? Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, Munich, and on Zoom, on March 13, 14:30 - 16:30 st. Registration: https://en.xing-events.com/AUCGBGM.html "The use of journal impact factors and other metric indicators of research productivity, such as the h-index, has been heavily criticised for being invalid for the assessment of individual researchers and for fueling a detrimental "publish or perish" culture. Multiple initiatives call for developing alternatives to existing metrics that better reflect quality (instead of quantity) in research assessment." (https://doi.org/10.23668/psycharchives.8162) A number of themes run through the recommendations of initiatives such as The Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA, https://sfdora.org/) and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA, https://coara.eu/) * the need to eliminate the use of journal-based metrics, such as Journal Impact Factors, in funding, appointment, and promotion considerations; * the need to assess research on its own merits rather than on the basis of the journal in which the research is published; and * the need to recognise the diverse outputs, practices, and activities that maximise the quality and impact of research As of 12 January 2023, 441 organisations (including European Commission, League of European Research Universities, European University Association, Science Europe, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) e.V., Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie) have signed the Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment. The signatories agree to define an action plan within the year. With these developments, it is evident that profound changes will come in how academic achievements will be evaluated, both in hiring and in funding decisions. But how can we practically implement and evaluate a reformed research assessment? What will be the consequences for researchers from signing institutions or applying for signatory funding agencies? How to ensure a smooth transition for early-career researchers? And how can we reconcile diverse needs across disciplines? To address these questions, the LMU Open Science Center is inviting you to a symposium, with short presentations followed by a panel discussion. * Prof Dr Toma Susi (CoARA Steering Board Member, University of Vienna) will present the Agreement and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (https://coara.eu/agreement/the-agreement-full-text/) * Prof Dr Kristin Mitte (Vice President Research & Development, Ernst-Abbe-Hochschule Jena) will share her views on how societal impact and translation of research constitute important evaluative dimensions in the applied sciences. * Dr Tobias Grimm (Head of Division Life Sciences II, German Research Foundation (DFG) head office) will present the DFG's approach to reforming research assessment. * Dr Jess Rohmann (Head of the Scientific Directorate Office at the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin) will present the perspective of Early-Career Researchers and a history of actions taken in Berlin Institutions (Berlin Institute of Health, Max Delbrück Center). * Prof Dr Felix Schönbrodt (Managing Director of the LMU Open Science Center) will present the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie's working group proposal for practical implementation, for the field of psychology in Germany (see https://doi.org/10.23668/psycharchives.8162 and https://doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/5yexm) The event will be chaired by Dr Heidi Seibold, Open and Reproducible Data Science Consultant, and Associate Member of the LMU Open Science Center. Feb. 1, 2023

Dear research data managers (a.k.a. researchers), We have a few seats left for the workshop on Friday 10 February on data anonymization, and the week of 13 to 17 February is the international Love Data Week, to which the LMU is participating with a program put together thanks to a collaboration between the LMU University Library, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the LMU Research Funding Department, the LMU IT Group Humanities, and the LMU Open Science Center. Happy research data management! M.(2023). Why does preregistration increase the persuasiveness of evidence? A Bayesian rationalization. https://aaronpeikert.github.io/bayes-prereg/manuscript.pdf Abstract: The replication crisis spurned many researchers to preregister their analyses before acquiring data. However, there is no agreement on what preregistration should accomplish and why it is uniquely suited to these goals. A widespread view is that preregistration should limit how much the data may influence the hypotheses tested on the same data (i.e., restrict researchers' degrees of freedom)). If no such influence occurs, an analysis is generally considered confirmatory. Consequently, many researchers believe that only confirmatory studies benefit from preregistration. In this presentation, Aaron Peikert argues that limiting preregistration to confirmatory research is unnecessarily restrictive. To that end, he will suggest how to formalize the objective of preregistration and aim to demonstrate that exploratory studies also benefit from the practice. Lastly, implications for the practice of preregistration will be discussed. Eric-Jan Wagenmakers Bayes factor seminar tomorrow
by LMU Open Science Center News Jan. 10, 2023

Jan. 10, 2023

Announced on behalf of Stephan Hartmann, from the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy<https://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de/index.html>: There is a seminar tomorrow 11.01. at 16:00 from Eric-Jan Wagenmakers in Ludwigstr. 31, ground floor, Room 021, which you are welcome to attend in person. Title: APPROXIMATE OBJECTIVE BAYES FACTORS FROM P-VALUES AND SAMPLE SIZE: THE 3p√n RULE Abstract: This presentation consists of a main course and a dessert. The main course concerns the approximate objective Bayes factor (henceforth JAB) proposed by Sir Harold Jeffreys in 1936. We revisit JAB and introduce a simple piecewise transformation that establishes a direct connection to the frequentist two-sided p-value. This provides p-value practitioners with a straightforward opportunity to obtain Bayesian benefits such as the ability to monitor evidence as data accumulate without reaching a foregone conclusion. For dessert I demonstrate that the much-bemoaned sensitivity of the Bayes factor to the prior distribution is in fact a condition sine qua non for coherent (i.e., non-farcical) inference. Best wishes and happy new year! Workshop: Reproducible Research in R, 26.01.2023
by LMU Open Science Center News Dec. 15, 2022

Dec. 15, 2022

Dear Open Science enthusiasts, The LMU Open Science Center is pleased to announce the following workshop: Workshop: Reproducible Research in R | How to do the same thing more than once When: Thursday, 26 Jan 2023, 09:00-12:00 Where: Hybrid format - in-person in room 3322 Leopoldstr. 13, Munich and on Zoom Abstract: Many researchers want to work reproducibly, but it is not easy. They must invest considerable time to acquire the knowledge of what is even possible, before getting the skills required for reproducible research. This workshop gives researchers a taste of how to create reproducible data analyses in R (and beyond). Specifically, researchers will learn, in a pre-set online environment, one way to automate the whole process from raw data to publishable manuscripts. This automation is possible by combining dynamic document generation (via R Markdown), version control (via Git), workflow orchestration (via Make) and software management (via Docker). These tools and, therefore, automatic reproduction of results are available on any machine with Docker installed. The resulting workflow is, hence, highly transferable across machines and time. These core properties of reproducibility are demonstrated for any reader by automatically reproducing the manuscript online via GitHub Actions. Instructor: Aaron Peikert, Center for Lifespan Psychology, Max Planck Institute for Human Development Facilitator: Felix Henninger (Chair for Statistics and Data Science in Social Sciences and the Humanities, LMU) More information and registration: https://en.xing-events.com/BUSNJFO.html Best wishes Malika -- Dr. Malika Ihle (she/her) (pronounciation<https://namedrop.io/malikaihle>) LMU Open Science Center Coordinator @MalikaIhle<https://twitter.com/MalikaIhle> | @MalikaIhle@scicomm.xyz<https://scicomm.xyz/web/@MalikaIhle> www.osc.lmu.de<http://www.osc.lmu.de/> | @lmu_osc<mailto:@lmu_osc> |@lmu_osc@scicomm.xyz<https://scicomm.xyz/web/@lmu_osc> Newsletter: https://lists.lrz.de/mailman/listinfo/lmu-osc

Open Science Community on Mastodon - an easy to use online directory
by LMU Open Science Center News Nov. 25, 2022

Nov. 25, 2022

Forwarded on behalf of the German Reproducibility Network ________________________________ Dear colleagues, there is currently an intense debate in the scientific community about whether to continue using Twitter. Many scientists use Mastodon as an alternative platform to connect to their colleagues and talk about things that matter to the Open Science movement. Switching to a new platform always involves certain hurdles and opportunity costs. In order to lower these thresholds and aid the development of the Open Science community, the GRN is maintaining a directory of community members to increase findability on Mastodon. So, If you're wondering how to find your existing contacts on Twitter on the new platform this list is your first stop: https://germanrepro.github.io/Mastodon-OpenScience The list serves two purposes, on the one hand you can add your own Mastodon account there to be found easier, on the other hand you can import the accounts stored there (all or selected) into your Mastodon account and follow them directly. A general overview about Mastodon and how it works can be found in the following article: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/08/mastodon-quick-start-guide/ An overview of different server instances (so-called federations) from the scientific field can be found on the following page: https://fediscience.org/server-list.html An interesting analysis, about switching to the new platform, which we would like to recommend, has been written by Andy Tattersall: https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2022/11/10/academics-can-eas… Please share this mail with your colleagues and within your networks! Best regards and see you on the other side, Rima, Guido and Maximilian from the GRN
