"Performance Engineering" as we define it is more than employing tools to identify hotspots and bottlenecks. It is about developing a thorough understanding of the interactions between software and hardware. This process must start at the core, socket, and node level, where the code gets executed that does the actual computational work. Once the architectural requirements of a code are understood and correlated with performance measurements, the potential benefit of optimizations can often be predicted. We introduce a ?holistic? node-level performance engineering strategy, apply it to different algorithms from computational science, and also show how an awareness of the performance features of an application may lead to notable reductions in power consumption. Since there are a lot of jobs in the queue in status 'user hold' and some of them for quite a long time we kindly ask you to review the status of your submitted jobs and release or delete such old user hold jobs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear users of the SuperMUC petaflop system at LRZ, due to a combined hard- and software maintenance both the thin and fat nodes of the system will be unavailable for user operation starting in the early morning of October 28. It may be necessary to stop batch scheduling already on the preceding Sunday afternoon. We expect the system to be available for user operation again in the afternoon of October 31. The following changes are noteworthy: * both LoadLeveler and IBM PE will be upgraded to more recent bug-fix releases. These changes should be transparent to users, i.e. no recompilation of software should be needed. * due to a recenty identified bug, there is a minor change in the way energy tags must be configured if you wish to run your job at a non-default frequency. SuperMUC: Removal of legacy NAS mounts on December 1, 2013

Dear users of SuperMUC, The legacy mounts of the NAS file systems that were used as work and scratch areas on the migration system, and have been accessible in read-only mode since the integration of the migration system, will become unavailable on December 1, 2013. Until then, any still needed data should have been archived on tape or transferred to the GPFS scratch or work directories. In particular, the environment variables $WORK_MIGRATION and $SCRATCH_MIGRATION will be deleted at the above date. Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, hiermit moechten wir Sie zu den folgenden Vortraegen am 31.10.2013 im Seminarraum 1 des LRZ einladen: Titel: Problemstellungen in der interorganisationalen Intrusion-Detection am Beispiel von GIDS Referent: Felix von Eye Beginn: 31.10.2013 15:15 Uhr Dauer: 30 min Inhalt: Das GIDS-Projekt hat die Entwicklung, Projektierung und Inbetriebnahme eines Grid Intrusion Detection Systems (GIDS) sowie die Ueberfuehrung des GIDS in den D-Grid Produktionsbetrieb zum Ziel. Hierbei gilt es, soweit wie moeglich bestehende Ansaetze zu integrieren und ein domaenen- und organisationsuebergreifendes Gesamtsystem zu entwickeln. Insbesondere die Faehigkeit mit Virtuellen Organisationen (VO) umzugehen und diese auch als Kunden in Betracht zu ziehen, ist dabei von entscheidender Bedeutung. Die Grundidee ist es, Angriffe durch die kooperative Nutzung und Auswertung von lokalen Sicherheitssystemen zu erkennen. Dazu ist der Austausch von Angriffsdaten und somit deren datenschutzkonforme Aufarbeitung, auch zur Wahrung individuell bestehender Sicherheits- und Informationsverbreitungsrichtlinien, notwendig. In einem kooperativen IDS besteht die Moeglichkeit, Angriffe schneller zu erkennen als dies mit unabhaengigen und nur die lokale Sicht beruecksichtigenden Sicherheitssystemen moeglich ist. Somit kann eine Verkuerzung der Reaktionszeit der beteiligten Parteien erzielt werden. Weiter koennen Vorwarnungen, an zum Zeitpunkt der Erkennung eines Angriffs noch nicht betroffenen Parteien, herausgegeben sowie ggf. praeventive Gegenmassnahmen ergriffen werden. Der Vortrag skizziert, an welche rechtlichen und organisatorischen Grenzen die Entwicklung und der Betrieb eines kooperativen Intrusion Detection Systems fuehren kann und gibt einen Ueberblick ueber die im Projekt verwendete Architektur. --- Titel: Needle. Found. - Effizientes Logmanagement am LRZ Referent: Stefan Metzger Beginn: 31.10.2013 15:45 Uhr Dauer: 30 min Inhalt: Auf Systemen installierte Betriebssysteme und Applikationen als auch Netzkomponenten produzieren Meldungen, wenn dort irgendetwas passiert. Etwa, wenn sich ein Benutzer erfolgreich an einem System anmeldet, ein Systemdienst neu gestartet wird, ein System mit am Lehrstuhl unbekannter MAC-Adresse versucht an einem beliebigen Switchport Konnektivitaet ins Netz zu erlangen oder bei einer Applikation Probleme auftreten. Jedes Mal wird ein entsprechender Logeintrag erstellt. In einer grossen Umgebung, wie man sie am LRZ vorfindet ist ein effizienter Umgang mit diesen auf diese Art produzierten Datenmassen sowohl technisch als auch organisatorisch kein triviales Unterfangen, gleichwohl wenn man bedenkt, dass es in diesem Bereich auch noch gesetzliche Vorgaben einzuhalten gilt. Der Begriff Logmanagement bezieht sich allgemein auf den Lebenszyklus eines Logeintrages. Beginnend mit dessen Erstellung und Speicherung, seine effiziente, tool-gestuetzte Auswertung oder auch das Archivieren oder Loeschen nennenswerte Phasen. Heutzutage ist der Umgang mit Logdaten meist rein reaktiv gepraegt, oftmals ineffizient umgesetzt, kostet enormen personellen Aufwand und wird als eher laestige Pflicht innerhalb des ohnehin schon sehr arbeitsintensiven Administratorenalltags angesehen. Im Rahmen des Vortrags soll ein Weg hin zu einem effizienten, proaktiven Logmanagement aufgezeigt werden, der mitunter auch Spass machen soll. Dabei sollen neben den Defiziten bisher eingesetzter Loesungen sowohl technisch als auch organisatorisch zu loesende Fragestellungen beantwortet und parallel dazu auf rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen hingewiesen werden, die es in diesem Umfeld zu beruecksichtigen gilt. Upd:SuperMUC: GPFS Problems (Addendum)

Changes to this message: Update Dear users of SuperMUC, examinations of DDN and IBM lead to the conclusion that central parts of the hardware serving the GPFS parallel filesystem have to be rebooted. This reboot requires a shutdown of GPFS on the complete machine. Accordingly, even the jobs that were still running have to be removed from the machine and batch processing has to be stopped. Before returning to normal user operation certain test procedures will have to be performed. Presumably, SuperMUC will return to normal operation tomorrow.
