Das Leibniz-Rechenzentrum laedt Sie im kommenden Wintersemester wieder herzlich zur folgenden Vortragsreihe ein: Professioneller IT-Betrieb in mittleren und grossen Umgebungen Gastreferenten aus Wirtschaft und Forschung & Lehre und Mitarbeiter des Leibniz-Rechenzentrums (LRZ) stellen Aufgabengebiete und Problemstellungen vor, die beim Betrieb von IT- und Kommunikationsanlagen in mittleren und grossen Umgebungen vorkommen. Die Vortraege richten sich an die folgenden Zuhoerergruppen: * Interessierte Teilnehmer des Muenchner Wissenschaftsnetzes erhalten einen Einblick, mit welchen Aufgaben und Problemen das LRZ konfrontiert ist, um die Dienste fuer seine Kunden zu erbringen. * Einige Studenten haben spaeter im Beruf mit dem Rechnerbetrieb zu tun. Durch die Vortraege lernen sie Aufgabengebiete kennen, mit denen sie sich dann moeglicherweise befassen muessen, und die normalerweise nicht in Vorlesungen behandelt werden. Changes to this message: Further delay Update (Oct 31 17:00): Unfortunately a further delay in restarting operation is unavoidable. We expect to restart batch processing later in the evening of Oct 31, but full user operation can only be restarted on Friday due to the bank holiday on Nov. 1. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Update (Oct 30 16:45): Based on a strong recommendation from Mellanox to install a firmware update on the interconnect switches, we have decided to postpone user operation by one day (see the new target date below) rather than schedule a new maintenance. This update should give a further improvement in signal quality, thereby hopefully reducing the intermittent occurrence of shaky nodes which have caused job failures. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Between October 29, 8:00 and October 31, 18:00 the system will be unavailable for user operation. During this maintenance configuration changes and software updates will be installed which should improve stability of both Intel and IBM MPI operation. The following items are of particular interest: * IBM PE 1.2 PTF9. This update fixes a memory leak in the IBM MPI library as well as some problems with MPI-IO. Please remove any MP_MPILIB=pempi and/or MP_SHARED_MEMORY=no workaround settings from your LoadLeveler scripts, recompile, relink and rerun your application and check whether the problems are solved. Netzwartungsarbeiten am 03.11.2012 Wie uns die Telekom soeben mitteilte werden folgende Glasfaserstrecken am Samstag, den 03.12.2012 in der Zeit von 00:30 Uhr - 06:00 Uhr fuer ca. drei Stunden ausfallen. Der Grund, laut Telekom, sind "dringende Kabelumlegung wegen Baufeldfreimachung". Veterinaerstr. 13, LMU Tiermedizin (Aussenanbidung). Dadurch waeren auch die Institute in Oberschleissheim betroffen die von der zentralen Tiermedizin IT betreut werden. Konradstr. 6, LMU Soziologie (Aussenanbindung). Aenderungen an der Mitteilung: Update Dear users of the Linux Cluster systems at LRZ, The serial segment maintenance of the Linux Cluster has concluded and it is now available for user operation. The login node lxlogin3.lrz.de (==lx64ia3.lrz.de) is not yet available (but the others are, see below). Please note that * the login nodes have new names lxlogin1, lxlogin2, lxlogin3. The old names (lx64ia2, lx64ia3) will continue to be valid, however the "lrz-muenchen.de" in the fully qualified host names must be replaced by "lrz.de". Please also note that the ssh keys of the login nodes have changed; updated keys are available via http:// www.lrz.de/services/compute/linux-cluster/intro/#TOC4 * SGE is not available any more for job processing; it has been replaced by the SLURM scheduler. Please consult the SLURM documentation at http://www.lrz.de/services/compute/linux-cluster/ batch_serial/ for information on the required changes to your script. * It may be necessary to recompile binary executables because the new operating environment has a newer and potentially incompatible C library "glibc". LoadLeveler Submit Filter We will introduce a filter that checks your LoadLeveler script during submission and tries to resolve issues with misconfigured jobs (e.g., specifying more than 32 tasks_per_core on SuperMUC, non-existing job classes, wrong time limits etc.) Please inform us if you run into trouble with this filter. Budgeting will start Beginning with Nov 1st, we will start booking consumed computing time off your budget. Energy Tags Using the energy functions of LoadLeveler, a job can run with a lower CPU frequency to save energy. You can set an acceptable performance degradation (max_perf_decrease_allowed) or required energy saving (energy_saving_req) for the job in the job command file. LoadLeveler will choose a suitable CPU frequency for the job or reject its submission based on the specified value. The energy_policy_tag helps LoadLeveler identify the energy data associated with a job. With the energy data, LoadLeveler can decide which frequency should be used to run the job with minimal performance degradation. Changes to this message: Update Dear users of SuperMUC, it has turned out that the needed maintenance measures not onlv involve updates on the compute nodes, but also in the storage and configuration infrastructure. Therefore we have decided to postpone the maintenance, as well as to extend it from one to two days. Between October 29, 8:00 and October 30, 18:00 the system will therefore be unavailable for user operation. During this maintenance configuration changes and software updates will be installed which should improve stability of both Intel and IBM MPI operation. Particularly a memory leak in the IBM MPI library and some problem with MPIIO should be fixed. If we have recommended to you to use: MP_MPILIB=pempi and/or MP_SHARED_MEMORY=no we ask you to recompile, relink and rerun your application and check against the new library without these setting. An update for the GPFS file system will also be installed (although it is not expected that this update will solve all outstanding problems). Upd:TSM-Probleme an den Servern S35 - S68 behoben

Aenderungen an der Mitteilung: Update UPDATE 23.10.2012 14:30 Uhr: Das Problem an den Servern S35 - S68 ist behoben. Sollten Sie noch irgendwelche Einschraenkungen beobachten, bitte zoegern Sie nicht und teilen uns dies ueber den Servicedesk (https://servicedesk.lrz.de) mit. UPDATE 23.10.2012 09:00 Uhr: Mittlerweile steht uns ein PTF Kernel von SuSE zur Verfuegung, der das Problem behebt. Um diesen einzuspielen kommt es an den Servern S35 - S68 heute zwischen 12:00 - 14:00 Uhr jeweils zu einer Unterbrechung von ca. 30 Minuten. UPDATE 12.10.2012 17:00 Uhr: Nach der derzeitigen Erkenntnis scheint sich ein Skalierungs und Locking Problem im SCSI Treiberstack mit dem am Montag eingespielten Betriebssystemupdate eingeschlichen zu haben. Dies fuehrt bei erhoehter Serverlast dazu, dass den TSM Servern nur ein Bruchteil der vorhandenen Bandbreite von und zur Tape Library zur Verfuegung steht. Wir haben die Disk-Caches der TSM-Instanzen - wo moeglich - vergroessert um hoffentlich ohne groessere Beeintraechtigungen der Backups ueber das Wochenende zu kommen. Bei Restores kann es zu groesseren Wartezeiten kommen. Sollten Sie dringend ein groesseres Restore benoetigen, so geben Sie uns bitte ueber den Servicedesk bescheid. Wir werden dann versuchen Ihren Job mit geeigneten Mitteln zu Priorisieren. Originalnachricht Wegen eines TSM Problems an den TSM Servern S35 - S68, kann es Beeintraechtigungen bei den Tapemounts und bei der Verfuegbarkeit der Server geben. Es wird mit IBM an einer Loesung gearbeitet. Aenderungen an der Mitteilung: Update Am 29.10.2012 fuehren wir an folgenden TSM Servern eine kombinierte Hard- und Softwarewartung durch: S35 S68, T68I1 T68I4, T69I1 T69I4 Dadurch ergeben sich voraussichtlich folgende Einschraenkungen: T68I1 T69I4: Kein Zugriff auf SuperMIG/MUC Archive ab ca. 10:00 16: 00 Uhr S35 S68: Ein bis zwei kleinere Unterbrechungen von ca. 30 Minuten im Zeitraum zwischen 10:00 und 16:00 Uhr. Sowie eine Unterbrechung der Tapemounts im Bereich von ca. 2 Stunden. Wir bitten um Ihr Verstaendnis.
