Der DFN hat wegen eines kritischen Fehlers eine kurzfristige Wartung des X-WiN-Routers in Garching zwischen 6:00 Uhr und 7:00 Uhr angekuendigt. Beim Umschalten auf die Backupanbindung sind kurzzeitige Stoerungen bei der Internetanbindung moeglich. Upd:Linux Cluster: UV still unavailable, MPP returned to operation

Changes to this message: MPP returned to user operation Update (Feb 6, 13:00): The MPP cluster has been returned to user operation. Please see below what you need to do as a consequence of the configuration changes. Dear users of the Linux Cluster systems at LRZ, unfortunately the Ultraviolet systems are presently unavailable for user operation, because a defective NUMAlink component needs replacement. We'll keep you updated about the status, and of course are working toward a speedy return to user operation. Apologies for the disruption of services. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Recent configuration changes: * The default MPI environment on the MPP cluster was changed from Parastation MPI to Intel MPI. However, the mpi.parastation module will remain available for legacy use until the end of 2013. On the sgi ICE and UV systems, the sgi MPI (mpi.mpt) will remain default. We strongly recommend that you recompile your applications with Intel MPI. If you insist on still running Parastation MPI binaries, you need to add the following lines to your SLURM job scripts: module unload mpi.intel module load mpi.parastation/5.0/intel * The 8-way Myrinet Cluster has been retired from parallel processing, and the nodes were added to the serial processing pool. This implies that the partition "myri_std" in the SLURM cell "myri" is now unavailable. * For the serial queues, SLURM fair share scheduling was introduced. For the parallel queues, a combination of fair share scheduling and favoring large jobs is now active. This is to prevent a single user from monopolizing cluster segments for long times if there are many jobs in the queue. * New storage systems have been introduced for the WORK (==PROJECT) and SCRATCH file systems. Please note that LRZ has only migrated WORK data to the new file system; data in SCRATCH have not been migrated. However the old SCRATCH file system will remain available as a separate mount in read-only mode on the login nodes until the end of March, 2013. Migration of data can then be done via commands like cd $SCRATCH_LEGACY cp -a <my_scratch_subdirectory> $SCRATCH The environment variable $SCRATCH_LEGACY will remain defined and point to the legacy scratch area until end of March, 2013. Changes to this message: MPP and UV unavailable Dear users of the Linux Cluster systems at LRZ, unfortunately both the MPP cluster and the Ultraviolet systems are presently unavailable for user operation. * On the UV, a defective NUMAlink component needs replacement. * On the MPP cluster, we are observing failures in MPI message transmission which need further investigation. Update (Feb 4, 2013, 14:40) Dear users of the SuperMUC system, IBM and LRZ have worked hard over the weekend to resolve all system stability issues caused by some of the maintenance activities last week. So far, we believe that almost all problems reported by users of the system in the last weeks should be resolved now. We ve also been able to clearly pinpoint one previously unknown problem with processing LoadLeveler job STDIN and STDOUT files in GPFS during our intensive test and debugging activities over the weekend. Therefore we recommend to forego using GPFS for these IO streams, and instead write them to your HOME directory. Please also place LoadLeveler output and error files inside your HOME directory. We expect the system to go online again this afternoon. We regret any inconvenience the extended maintenance activities may have caused, and hope for your understanding. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear users of the SuperMUC petascale system at LRZ, Due to a combined hard- and software maintenance, SuperMUC will be unavailable for user operation between January 28, 8:00 and the afternoon of January 31. International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences

Training available for students in U.S., Europe, and Japan at International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the United States, Europe, and Japan are invited to apply for the fourth International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences, to be held June 23-28, 2013, in New York City. The summer school is sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project, the European Union Seventh Framework Program s Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe Implementation Phase project (PRACE-2IP), and RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS). Netzwartung am 5.2.2013 / 12.2.2013

Am 5.2. sind vom LRZ keine Wartungarbeiten vorgesehen. Der DFN-Verein hat fuer den X-WiN-Anschluss des Schneefernerhauses auf der Zugspitze eine Router-Wartung zwischen 2:00 Uhr und 5:30 Uhr angekuendigt. Vorankuendigung: Naechste Woche, am 12.2. ist die Ersetzung des Routers csr1-kic in Grosshadern geplant. Dudurch wird das Netz im Campus Grosshadern/Martinsried zwischen 7:30 Uhr und 8:00 Uhr ausfallen. Es wird der erste Einsatz eines Routers der Plattform Cisco Nexus 7000 im MWN sein. Possible configuration problems on the MPP cluster still need investigation, please bear with us. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Maintenance windows Due to an extended hard- and software maintenance, the MPP, MAC and 8-way Myrinet clusters will be unavailable for user operation between Jan 28, 8:00 am and Feb 1. This includes the login nodes lxlogin1-2. ( Note: Until Jan 31, 8:00am, the lxlogin3.lrz.de system will remain available for submission of serial jobs.) All other cluster segments (serial cluster including all hosted systems, sgi ICE and UV systems, 32 way Myrinet systems) will be unavailable between Jan 31, 8:00 am and Feb 1.
