OWA-Vorschau fuer Dateianhaenge wegen Sicherheitsluecke deaktiviert

Aufgrund einer gestern bekannt gewordenen Sicherheitsluecke in Exchange haben wir wie von Microsoft empfohlen die Vorschau fuer Dateianhaenge in Outlook Web App (OWA) deaktiviert. Das bedeutet, dass z.B. bei PDF- oder Word-Dokumenten keine integrierte Vorschau mehr moeglich ist, sondern diese Dokumente nur mit einer geeigneten Applikation betrachtet werden koennen. Es entfaellt also die bisherige Funktion "Als Webseite oeffnen". Wir sind uns bewusst, dass die Deaktivierung der Vorschaufunktion das Arbeiten unbequemer macht, halten die Massnahme aber aus Sicherheitsgruenden fuer absolut notwendig. Starting user operation of SuperMUC

Our new system SuperMUC has been ranked as No. 4 of the world's fastest supercomputers. We will start initial user operation with selected projects on July 30, 2012 (10:00 AM). The first projects to access the system have been selected from the last Gauss Call and from those which recently consume the major part of resources on SuperMIG. These users will be contacted by LRZ individually soon. Some time later, LRZ will proceed to ramp up usage until regular user operation will be reached approximately end of August. We ask all users who gain initial access to SuperMUC to be fair by migrating their jobs to the new system as fast as possible and thereby removing their job load from SuperMIG. We expect that during early user operation we still need to flush out glitches. Therefore, early users must expect unannounced or very short-term scheduled maintenances. Early users are encouraged to report any observed problems via the LRZ service desk. Differences between SuperMIG and SuperMUC usage * Node architecture: SuperMUC is comprised of 16-way Sandy Bridge nodes; these are equipped with 32 GBytes of main memory much less than the SuperMIG nodes. Due to OS requirements, probably 26 GBytes per node will be available in user space. LRZ will also allow usage of logical hardware threads (SMT/Hyperthreads), enabling use of up to 32 tasks per node), however this resource is also partially used by OS services, and it is very much application dependent whether any performance improvement can be derived from use of SMT. * Code compatibility: It is highly recommended to rebuild separate executables for use on SuperMUC. While the compilers and basic libraries will be the same as on SuperMIG, the new architecture supports additional instructions (AVX SIMD extension), and IBM has implemented a major new version of the parallel environment (including the MPI library). Both of these may inhibit backward compatibility, and we d like to avoid having to deal with a lot of incidents reporting such (not really solvable) compatibility issues. * File systems: The file systems pointed to by the $SCRATCH and $WORK environment variables will be the new, and vastly larger and better-performing GPFS file systems. The $HOME file system will be still shared between SuperMIG and SuperMUC. We will provide additional information on how to transfer data between the non-shared SuperMIG and SuperMUC file systems via the file system documentation. Documentation The LRZ SuperMUC web page will be updated to reflect the changes discussed above. In particular the new LoadLeveler job classes and keywords and the file systemss will be documented; it may take some time before other parts of the documentation are complete. PRACE Autumn School 2012 on Massively Parallel Architectures and Molecular Simulations

The National Centre for Supercomputing Applications-Bulgaria is pleased to announce the next PRACE Autumn School which will be on Massively Parallel Architectures and Molecular Simulations in Sofia from 24 to 28 September 2012. Within a five day intensive event participants will be introduced multi scales/multi physics molecular simulation methods and software for high performance computing applications in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology research, cell medicine, immunology, chemical synthesis, atomic level material damage investigations and investigation of clusters of billions of nanoparticles. The School will focus on the following topics: DL_POLY; Long-Range Interactions calculations; GROMACS; Massively Parallel Computers. Gauss Call for Large Scale HPC Projects

Large-scale projects and highly scalable parallel applications are characterised by large computing time requirements, not only for short time frames, but often for longer time periods. Projects are classified as "Large-Scale", if they require more than 2% of the potentially available core cycles for GCS in one year on a member centre's high-end system, i.e. * more than 36 Mill. core-hours at JSC (IBM Blue Gene/Q), * more than 20 Mill. core-hours at LRZ (IBM iDataPlex), * more than 16 Mill. core-hours at HLRS (HERMIT Step 1). For these large-scale projects a competitive review and resource allocation process is established by the GCS. Requests for resources below these limits will be accepted by the individual member centres. Requests above these limits will be handed over to GCS, handled according to the joint procedures, and will be reviewed in a national context. A "Call for Large-Scale Projects" is published by the Gauss Centre twice a year. Dates for closure of calls are usually at the end of winter and at the end of summer of each year. Application for a large-scale project should be performed by filling in the appropriate electronic application form that can be accessed from the GCS web page "Computing Time" (http://www.gauss-centre.eu/ computing-time) Note that the regular application forms of the GCS member centres can be reached from there, and users are required to choose a centre that provides the architecture and software most appropriate for their programs. The proposals for large-scale projects will be first reviewed with respect to their technical feasibility. Afterwards, they will be peer-reviewed for a comparative scientific evaluation. On the basis of this evaluation by a GCS committee the projects will be approved for a period of one year and given their allocations. A project with a running large-scale grant on one of the centres or targeting multiple GCS platforms must clearly indicate and justify this as part of the application. Criteria for decision Applications for compute resources are evaluated only according to their scientific excellence. * The proposed scientific tasks must be scientifically challenging, and their treatment must be of substantial interest. * Clear scientific goals and verifiable milestones on the way to reach these goals must be specified. * The implementation of the project must be technically feasible on the available computing systems, and must be in reasonable proportion to the performance characteristics of these systems. * The Principal Investigator must have a proven scientific record, and she/he must be able to successfully accomplish the proposed tasks. In particular, applicants must possess the necessary specialized know-how for the effective use of high-end computing systems. This has to be proven in the application for compute resources, e.g. by presenting work done on smaller computing system, scaling studies etc. * The specific features of the high-end computers should be optimally exploited by the program implementations. This will be checked regularly during the course of the project Application for Large-Scale Projects for the LRZ@GCS Supercomputer SuperMUC The GCS Large-Scale call is open for project leaders, whose affiliation is in Germany (or is a foreign office of a German institution). Interested researchers from abroad (within Europe) are invited to apply via http://www.prace-ri.eu/hpc-access. Project applications for SuperMUC may be submitted by any scientist qualified in his or her respective field of research. Computing resources are allocated on the basis of independent referees' reports. Apart from the scientific relevance of the project, an important criterion for the allocation of computing resources is that the project can make efficient use of the computer and use a large number of processors in parallel for the simulations.
