Proposals, Budgets, Maintenance and various Calls

Acceptance of Proposals for SuperMUC We have already informed you about the opportunity to file "Large Scale Projects" via the Seventh Gauss Call (see http://www.lrz.de/services/ compute/supermuc/aktuell/ali4221/). Large Scale Projects require more than 40 million core-hours per year. Starting on March 1st, we will now also accept normal scale projects. Please submit your application for compute time by using the online form: See: http://www.lrz.de/services/compute/supermuc/projectproposal/. Access to the new 3 Petaflop/s system SuperMUC is expected to be opened in July or August, 2012. Conversion of existing budgets The HLRB Steering Committee has decided to scale up the remaining compute time with a factor of 3. This will be done in early March. Maintenance A combined HW and SW maintenance is scheduled for March 5 and 6, 2012. Planned work: * New Kernel * OFED upgrade * File system parameter * Intel compiler update No access to SuperMIG is possible during this period. KONWIHR-III Bavarian universities can apply for financial support by KONWIHR (Competence Network for Technical, Scientific High Performance Computing in Bavaria). For details see: http://www.lrz.de/services/compute/supermuc/calls/# KONWIHR Deadlines: 1 March 2012; 1 Nov 2012 PRACE Calls We also want to draw your attention to the PRACE Calls for access to Tier-0 systems in Europe (including SuperMUC). The PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe) Research Infrastructure allows researchers from across Europe to apply for time on high-end high-performance computers via a peer review process. Preparatory access allows researchers to apply for code scalability testing and also support for code development and optimisation from PRACE RI members software experts. Preparatory access allows researchers to optimise their codes before responding to project calls. There are 3 types of preparatory access: * Code scalability testing to obtain scalability data which can be used as supporting information when responding to future PRACE project calls. * Code development and optimisation by the applicant using their own personne resources (i.e. without PRACE support). * Code development with support from experts from PRACE. Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (Leibniz-Rechenzentrum, LRZ) is part of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften). LRZ is a central site for large scale data archiving and backup. It is an active player in the area of high performance computing for over 20 years and provides computing power on several different levels. It offers its services to universities in Germany and to publicly funded research institutions, like Max-Planck and Helmholtz Institutes. LRZ is currently preparing the installation of its new high-end system (SuperMUC) with a peak performance of 3 PetaFlop/s and more than 150,000 cores. When SuperMUC goes into operation it will be a world-leading platform for accelerating open scientific discovery. For the support of the users and applications on the new system LRZ is looking for Scientific Computing Experts The positions are available immediately. Applications will be accepted until March 31st, 2012. Required experience and skills * PhD or university (post) graduate degree, diploma, master's degree or equivalent in a scientifically oriented subject (computational science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences etc.) * Good HPC skills, a broad knowledge of massively parallel high-performance algorithms, programming languages and libraries as well as performance analysis tools. * Initiative, capacity for teamwork, and creativity. * Good oral presentation and writing skills in German and English Preferred Experiences * Experience with large-scale parallel application development, debugging and performance tuning * Demonstrated ability to lead scientific and technical efforts in HPC * Experience in managing scientific projects and/or teams Duties/Responsibilities * Perform work in the application support team * Optimization, scaling and performance improvement of strategic large-scale applications * Performance analysis and benchmarking * Identification and solution of user problems * Keeping contact with scientific stakeholders and users * Promotion and organization of scientific outreach activities through presentations and providing written materials * Purchasing and maintaining third party applications and tools * Writing of reports, grant applications, and documentation * Stimulation of new developments in HPC Due to its state-of-the-art computing facilities and its proximity to the Munich universities, LRZ offers a very stimulating and innovative environment. Dr. Bernhard Reitinger Montag, 19.03.2012, 14:00-15:30 LRZ, Boltzmannstrasse 1, 85748 Garching, Hoersaal (H.E.009) Abstract: Maps are ubiquitous in our daily lives ranging from navigation and routing to trip planning and virtual tours in the internet. Although navigation maps is common nowadays,the generation requires lots of world class research efforts. This talk will give a tour from the very beginning of the processing chain the digital aerial camera to the very end the map product known as Bing Maps. Different to consumer cameras, the developed aerial sensor captures images with a resolution of 260 MPix per shot every 2 seconds. Algorithms have been developed by our research team which provide an interactive visualization of large amount of image data as well as efficient parallel processing to the final product. Techniques known from Microsoft s PhotoSynth product, but also world class dense matching and ortho generation methods are part of the presented pipeline. Biography: Bernhard Reitinger received his master s degree from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. In 2005, he finished his PhD at the Technical University in Graz where he was focused on medical visualization within virtual reality environments. After he was working as a post-doc researcher in Graz in the context of augmented reality and computer vision, he was hired by Microsoft in 2007 to lead a research and development team focusing on computer vision and visualization of digital aerial cameras.
