Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, hiermit moechten wir Sie zu folgendem Vortrag am 24.10. im Seminarraum 1 des LRZ einladen: Titel: Wo werden die Bits gekuehlt? Referent: Helmut Breinlinger Beginn: 15:15 Uhr Dauer: 60 min Inhalt: Was geschieht in den Katakomben eines Grossrechenzentrums? Nicht nur Amazon, Google, Ebay und die Geheimdienste, auch Forschung und Lehre verlassen sich mittlerweile auf gewaltige Rechen-, Speicher- und Kommunikationskapazitaeten. Die Hardware dafuer stellt die sichtbare Spitze des Eisbergs dar Server, Speicher und Router fuellen grosse Saele. Um diese IT-Ressourcen zuverlaessig zu betreiben, bedarf es vor allem elektrischer Energie abgestufter Guete und des intelligenten Umgangs mit Abwaerme. Bezahlbarkeit und Umweltvertraeglichkeit sind Kriterien, die bei allem Geschwindigkeits- und Speicherhunger eingehalten werden muessen. Der Rest des Eisbergs, die hierzu notwendige Infrastruktur des LRZ, wird vorgestellt und kann als Heavy Metal im Rahmen einer Fuehrung besichtigt werden. Im Anschluss an diesen Vortrag findet eine Fuehrung durch das Haus statt. Fuer diese Fuehrung ist eine Anmeldung notwendig. Aenderungen an der Mitteilung: Keine Stromabschaltung Schellingstrasse TUM Garching Maschinenwesen Gebaeudeteil 1 Zwischen 7:00 Uhr und 9:00 Uhr werden die Glasfaseranschluesse im Verteilerraum umgebaut. Dabei kommt es in den verschiedenen Stockwerken jeweils zu einer kurzen Unterbrechung. Es ist nicht auszuschliessen dass sich die Arbeiten bis nach 9:00 Uhr hinziehen. Die angekuendigte Stromabschaltung in der Schellingstr. 7 und 9 wurde abgesagt bzw. auf einen noch unbekannten Termin verschoben. Big Data - Expressions of Interest

The success of PRACE in providing unprecedented allocations of resources for computational science projects of the highest scientific quality has identified challenges in the storage, analysis, visualization and transfer of data connected to large-scale simulations. In order to provide the best possible services to the scientific community and ensure the largest possible impact of these large-scale simulations, the PRACE Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and the Board of Directors (BoD) of PRACE would like to get a better understanding of the challenges related to big data in connection with large scale simulations. The SSC invites Expressions of Interest for data services connected to large-scale computational projects, in order to better understand the level of demand, the scientific justification for such data services and the best way to structure these data services. The focus of the EoI is solely on data services that need to be tightly coupled to a PRACE computing system. Expressions of Interest should be submitted to eoi-bigdata(a)prace-ri.eu before 15 November 2013. The submissions should not exceed two pages (11pt Times New Roman, 1.5 cm margins) and should address the following points: 1. The scientific justification and why the handling of data must be closely integrated with the PRACE computing services. 2. Expected amount of data and time-frame for which the data must be accessible (both real-time and archived) at the PRACE computing resource, and expected computing resources needed for the analysis. 3. How the data will be managed and used. 4. Whether the data should/should not be open to the wider scientific community and how scientific access and accessibility/usability will be handled. 5. The transfer of data to/from the PRACE resource. Please note that submission of an Expression of Interest carries no implication regarding any allocation of resources or implementation of services. TUM Garching Maschinenwesen Gebaeudeteil 1 Zwischen 7:00 Uhr und 9:00 Uhr werden die Glasfaseranschluesse im Verteilerraum umgebaut. Stromabschaltung Schellingstr. 7 und 9 am Donnerstag Die LMU-Verwaltung hat mitgeteilt, dass am 24.10.13 zwischen 04:30 Uhr und 09:00 Uhr in den Haeusern Schellingstr. 7 und 9 der Strom abgeschaltet wird, um einen neuen Verteiler zu montieren. Linux Cluster Systems: partially unavailable on Oct. 28

Dear users of the Linux Cluster systems, due to the second stage of necessary works on the electrical infrastructure, a subset of the HPC cluster systems at LRZ will be unavailable for user operation on Oct 28, starting at 8:00 am. The systems impacted are: * Serial partition of the Linux cluster * Myrinet partition of the Linux cluster * some housed cluster partitions We have taken steps to assure that the operation of the network can continue without interruption; therefore we expect that all other cluster parts remain available for user operation. SuperMUC: scheduled maintenance Oct 28-31

Dear users of the SuperMUC petaflop system at LRZ, due to a combined hard- and software maintenance both the thin and fat nodes of the system will be unavailable for user operation starting in the early morning of October 28. It may be necessary to stop batch scheduling already on the preceding Sunday afternoon. We expect the system to be available for user operation again in the afternoon of October 31. The following changes are noteworthy: * both LoadLeveler and IBM PE will be upgraded to more recent bug-fix releases. These changes should be transparent to users, i.e. no recompilation of software should be needed. * due to a recenty identified bug, there is a minor change in the way energy tags must be configured if you wish to run your job at a non-default frequency. The documentation at http://www.lrz.de/ services/compute/supermuc/loadleveler/#energy has been accordingly updated. * When you renew your password using the ID portal (https:// idportal.lrz.de), you now have to confirm that your work and the results are compliant with the EU and German export and embargo regulations.
