Upd:Einfuehrung Passwortrichtlinien zum 01.06.2012 / New Authentication Regulations

Aenderungen an der Mitteilung: Text auch in Englisch [English version below] Mit Wirkung zum 1. Juni 2012 gelten am LRZ Passwortrichtlinien, die u.a. vorsehen, dass Passwoerter spaetestens alle 12 Monate geaendert werden muessen. Diese Regelung gilt fuer alle Kennungen, die ueber Master User vergeben wurden, und fuer alle Kennungen, die an externe Studenten vergeben wurden. Wir sind uns bewusst, dass diese Massnahme fuer Sie eine gewisse Mehrarbeit bedeutet, halten sie aus Sicherheitsgruenden jedoch fuer unbedingt notwendig und setzen dabei entsprechende Empfehlungen des BSI (Bundesamt fuer Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) und der IT-Sicherheitsnorm ISO/IEC 27001 um. Die ersten Passwoerter werden, je nach Datum der letzten Aenderung, ab Februar 2013 verfallen. Das aktuelle Verfallsdatum Ihres Passworts wird Ihnen ab Mitte Juni in den Self Services des Id-Portals (https://idportal.lrz.de) nach Klick auf "Person -> Daten anzeigen" oder "Kennung -> Kennungsdaten anzeigen" angezeigt. Damit Sie nicht von einem Passwortverfall ueberrascht werden, werden wir Sie ausserdem rechtzeitig vorher per Mail daran erinnern und zur Passwortaenderung auffordern. Falls Sie die Verfallsfrist dennoch versaeumen, ist auch das nicht weiter schlimm. Ihre Kennung wird dann lediglich solange gesperrt bis Sie sich ins Id-Portal eingeloggt und dort ein neues Passwort gesetzt haben. Die neuen Passwortrichtlinien sehen des weiteren vor, dass Startpasswoerter, die von einem Master User oder vom LRZ gesetzt werden, vom jeweiligen Benutzer nochmals geaendert werden muessen. Dies gilt sowohl fuer neu angelegte Kennungen als auch fuer existierende Kennungen, fuer die ein neues Passwort gesetzt wird. Eine Kennung ist also nach einer Passwortsetzung durch einen Master User oder das LRZ erst dann nutzbar, wenn das Passwort durch den jeweiligen Benutzer im Id-Portal nochmals geaendert wurde. Wir wollen damit sicherstellen, dass das Passwort wirklich nur dem betreffenden Benutzer bekannt ist. Bitte beachten Sie schliesslich, dass die Passwortrichtlinien fuer alle LRZ-Kennungen gelten, die direkt vom LRZ vergeben werden, also nicht nur fuer persoenliche Kennungen, sondern auch fuer Funktionskennungen. Dagegen gelten fuer LRZ-Kennungen, die ueber CampusLMU, TUMonline oder Grid-Projekte eingerichtet werden, die Regelungen der jeweiligen Quellsysteme. In particular, these requirements imply that passwords must be changed at least once in 12 months. This regulation applies to all accounts handed out by Master Users, as well as accounts provided to external students. We are aware that this measure imposes some overhead on users, but believe that it is necessary on security grounds, having implemented it based on guidelines of BSI (federal agency for information security) and the IT security standard ISO/IEC 27001. The date at which password invalidation will be initiated (depending on the date of the last password change) will be in February 2013. You will be able to determine the actual invalidation date for your password from mid-June onward by logging into the ID portal (https:// idportal.lrz.de) and selecting the menu item "Person -> view" or "Account -> view authorizations". In order to prevent being surprised by a password becoming invalid, you will be notified of the need to change your password via e-mail. Even if you miss the deadline for the password update, this only implies a temporary suspension of your account - you will still be able to log in to the ID portal and make the password change. Furthermore, the new regulations for password use also impose the requirement that starting passwords provided by Master Users or Project Managers must be changed before the account is used, no matter whether it is a new account, or an account for which the password was reset. Hence, also in this case the password must be set to a new value in the ID portal before the account can be used. The intent is to assure that the password is known only to the actual user of the account. Finally, please be aware that these regulations apply for all LRZ accounts directly assigned by LRZ; this includes personal accounts as well as functional accounts. On the other hand, LRZ accounts provisioned via CampusLMU, TUMonline or Grid Projects use their own, source-specific regulations. SuperMUC PetaFlop System: Status and schedule for start of user operation

Dear users of the national supercomputing facilities at LRZ, With the installation of the new three Petaflop/s system "SuperMUC" by IBM nearing its completion, we are now starting to prepare for user operation of the system. The LINPACK benchmark has been successfully run, and the results will soon be published at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC12) in Hamburg; people participating in ISC are cordially invited to the Gauss Centre s booth, where further information will be forthcoming. Also, LRZ s director Prof. Arndt Bode will be speaker of a keynote talk at ISC12, an important topic of which will be the innovations that were developed to enable energy efficient usage of SuperMUC. ISC12 event calendar * Monday 9:00 ISC Opening session with 39th TOP500 list * Thursday 12:00 keynote talk by Prof. Bode on extreme energy efficiency. * Gauss Centre for Supercomputing workshops The Gauss Centre's booth at ISC12 has the number 150. Starting user operation It is presently expected that initial user operation with users selected from large-scale projects will start at the end of June or the beginning of July. These users will be contacted by LRZ approximately one week in advance of being authorized for access. Some time later, LRZ will proceed to ramp up usage until regular user operation will be reached approximately in mid-August. Limitations of early user operation We expect that during early user operation we still need to flush out glitches. Therefore, early users must expect unannounced or very short-term scheduled maintenances. Early users are encouraged to report any observed problems via the LRZ service desk. Differences between SuperMIG and SuperMUC usage * Node architecture: SuperMUC is comprised of 16-way Sandy Bridge nodes; these are equipped with 32 GBytes of main memory much less than the SuperMIG nodes. Due to OS requirements, probably 26 GBytes per node will be available in user space. LRZ will also allow usage of logical hardware threads (SMT/Hyperthreads, enabling use of up to 32 tasks per node), however this resource is also partially used by OS services, and it is very much application dependent whether any performance improvement can be derived from use of SMT. * Code compatibility: It is recommended to rebuild separate executables for use on SuperMUC. While the compilers and basic libraries will be the same as on SuperMIG, the new architecture supports additional instructions (AVX SIMD extension), and IBM has implemented a major new version of the parallel environment (including the MPI library). Both of these may inhibit backward compatibility, and we d like to avoid having to deal with a lot of incidents reporting such (not really solvable) compatibility issues. * File systems: The file systems pointed to by the $SCRATCH and $WORK environment variables will be the new, and vastly larger and better-performing GPFS file systems. The HOME file system will be still shared between SuperMIG and SuperMUC. We will provide additional information on how to transfer data between the non-shared SuperMIG and SuperMUC file systems via the file system documentation. Documentation The LRZ SuperMUC web page will be updated to reflect the changes discussed above. In particular the new LoadLeveler job classes and the file systems will be documented; it may take some time before other parts of the documentation are complete. Courses If you are interested in an introduction on how to use the features and software of the new system, please register for the course "Introduction to SuperMUC" scheduled for the week starting July 2. Specialists from Intel and IBM have been invited to do presentations at this event. Dabei ist ein kurzer Ausfall zu erwarten. Betroffen sind u. a. virtuelle Maschinen und der Exchange-Maildienst. 2. LMU Kaulbachstr. 51a Zwischen 7:30 Uhr und 9:00 Uhr wird der Switch swg1-kso ersetzt. 3. Webdns-Dienst Wegen eines Softwareupgrades steht der Webdns-Dienst zwischen 8:30 Uhr und 9:00 Uhr nicht zur Verfuegung. 4. Studentenwohnheim Garching Enzianstr. 3-5 Zwischen 8:00 Uhr und 9:00 Uhr wird hier die Netzanbindung umgestellt. 5. Switch-Updates Zwischen 7:00 Uhr und 8:00 Uhr wird bei einigen Switches ein Software- Update durchgefuehrt. Betroffen sind folgende Areale: - Tierklinik Geb. D - ZAAR Destouchesstr. 68 - Fortiss-Institut Guerickestr. 25 - MPI fuer Physik Foehringer Ring 6 - Kinderhaus Garching - ZNN Garching - Chemiegeb. Umstellung der Webdisk am LRZ

Am 8.6.2012 wird die bestehende Webdisk am LRZ durch ein neues Produkt abgeloest. Die bisherige URL https://webdisk.ads.mwn.de bleibt dabei erhalten. Die Webdisk bietet einen weltweiten Zugriff ueber einen aktuellen Browser oder gaengige Mobilegeraete auf den zentralen am LRZ gehosteten MWN-Speicher nas.ads.mwn.de. Um auf Daten zugreifen zu koennen benoetigen Sie eine gueltige LRZ-Kennung. Beim Anmelden an der Webdisk werden alle fuer Sie zur Verfuegung stehenden Ablagebereiche Ihrer Einrichtung auf dem MWN-Speicher angebunden. Sie koennen Daten vom MWN-Speicher auf Ihr lokales Dateisystem herunter- oder hochladen. Es gelten dabei die gleichen Beschraenkungen wie Quotas oder NTFS-Filerechte, wie beim Zugriff ueber das CIFS-Protokoll aus dem MWN heraus. Quotaerhoehung auf MWN-Speicher

Das Quota fuer die persoenlichen Ablagen auf dem MWN-Speicher nas.ads.mwn.de wurde zum 1.6.2012 von 10 GB auf 20 GB und die Anzahl der Dateien von 50.000 auf 80.000 erhoeht. Das LRZ bietet Mitarbeitern und Studierenden der Muenchner Universitaeten zentrale, hochverfuegbare Dateidienste zur gemeinsamen Nutzung an. Auf den MWN-Speicher kann von jedem Rechner im MWN oder ueber die Webdisk von ausserhalb des MWN zugegriffen werden. Der Speicherplatz kann vom Kunden selbst verwaltet werden. Die Authentifizierung erfolgt ueber die zentralen Nutzerverwaltungen von LRZ oder TUM. Weitere Informationen zu dem Dienst finden Sie unter Online-Speicher. Am 29.6. veranstaltet die Firma ESRI (Geoinformationssysteme) einen Campustag an der LMU. Dazu sind auch Angehoerige und Studierende anderer Universitaeten und Hochschulen willkommen.
