PRACE Tier-1 Workshop 2011

PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe, is organizing a workshop on utilizing Tier-1 HPC systems on 29-30 November 2011 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The aim of the workshop is to support researchers granted compute resources through the recent DECI-7 call as well as other potential users of the pan-European Tier-1 infrastructure. This 2-day event is based around a number of invited talks and hands-on sessions that will provide practical guidelines and experience on utilizing the European Tier-1 systems available through the DECI-7 call. Potential users of this Tier-1 infrastructure are also invited to participate in the workshop. A large emphasis will be placed on the hands-on sessions where participants have the opportunity to identify and discuss issues directly with PRACE staff. There will also be a special session (optional) at the end of the workshop dedicated for one-to-one consultation on participants projects. Areas to be covered at the workshop includes: . General information on PRACE . Brief introduction to the Tier-1 systems . Generic PRACE services such as user and application support . Practical orientation of the Tier-1 systems, i.e. day-to-day usage. . Short exercises in compiling and running parallel code. . Deployment of users own code This workshop is hosted by SARA, Dutch national HPC and e-Science Support Center. SARA offers an integrated ICT research infrastructure and provides services in the areas of computing, data storage, visualization, networking, cloud and e-science. Attendance is free for all EU academics. Limited support is available for travel and accommodation costs for a small number of attendees. Ausserbetriebnahme sun1 und sun2 Zum Ende des Jahres 2011 werden die restlichen Solaris Maschinen des ehemaligen Sun-Cluster (sun1 und sun2) ausser Betrieb genommen. Diese Maschinen wurden einmal zur Deckung des Rechenbedarfs solcher Kunden beschafft, fuer die PCs nicht ausreichten und Hochleistungs-- rechner ueberdimensioniert waren - eine Luecke, die sich laengst geschlossen hat. Derzeit stellen die Maschine noch 2 wichtige Dienste zur Verfuegung, fuer beide Dienste wird es eine Ersatzloesung geben. - Upload/Download von Webdaten per SCP/SFTP Der Upload/Download von Webdaten (virtuelle Webserver, persoenliche Homepage) ist auch ueber den FTP-Server des LRZ (ftp.lrz.de) moeglich. Der FTP-Server unterstuetzt die folgenden Uebertragungsprotokolle : FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP. - Anlegen von Transferverzeichnissen am FTP-Server Dazu wird derzeit noch das Kommando "mk-transfer-area" auf sun1/sun2 verwendet, dieses Kommando wird rechtzeitig durch eine webbasierte Anwendung ersetzt. Upd:All HPC Systems: Interruption of user operation / storage maintenance

Changes to this message: Update Dear users of the HPC systems at LRZ, As part of its continuing efforts to provide ever increasing reliable and fast storage capacity to its HPC users, LRZ has installed new network attached storage devices which will be taken into user operation in early November. Changing over to this new storage area, which will comprise all HPC user's home directories, necessitates an interruption of operation on all HPC systems. For * all systems in the Linux Cluster * the supzero migration system user operation will be suspended on Friday, October 28 at 10:00 am. It is expected that most systems will go online again in the afternoon of November 2, 2010. The following exceptions should be noted: * HLRB-II was completely retired from user operation since it had reached the end of its lifetime. * the new MEGWare MPP cluster will undergo a prolonged maintenance because it is intended to move the system into a different computer room which can provide the advanced cooling technology for which the system has been designed in order to achieve optimal energy efficiency. Therefore, the MPP system will be unavailable between October 26, 10:00 am and November 11. Important Note: After the maintenance, the path name for your HOME directory will be changed to start with /home/hpc. I.e., * supzero: /home/hlrb2/projectID/userID will be changed to /home/hpc/ projectID/userID * Linux Cluster: /home/hlrb2/projectID/userID will be changed to / home/hpc/projectID/userID We will provide softlinks in the file system so that all your jobs and scripts should still work. However for the future and for the purpose of archiving we urge you to change these. A general advice is not to use absolute pathes for filenames but the HOME-variable.
