GPU-Cluster is available for user operation at LRZ

A GPU-cluster with 4 nodes and 8 Tesla Fermi 2070 GPU is available for user operation at LRZ, each node is equipped with Intel Xeon based 8-way (L5630) and 2 Tesla Fermi 2070. Note: Interactive jobs are not supported on this system. The resource manager SLURM is used to allocate a free GPUs or CPUs for your job. Character Generator Protocol aus dem Internet ins MWN wird gesperrt

In letzter Zeit werden vermehrt Systeme im Muenchner Wissenschaftsnetz fuer Denial of Service (DoS und DDos) Angriffe mit dem Character Generator Protokoll (chargen, UDP Port 19) missbraucht. Der Dienst wird nur zum Testen und zur Fehlersuche benoetigt. Das LRZ hat sich deshalb entschlossen, diesen Verkehr aus dem Internet ins MWN zu sperren. Die Sperre wird am Mittwoch, den 12.06.2013 um 09:00 Uhr aktiviert. Bei einer benoetigten und begruendeten Nutzung des chargen-Protokolls auch von ausserhalb des MWN koennen bestimmte Adressen von diesen Sperren ausgenommen werden. Sollten Sie Bedarf nach solchen Ausnahmen haben, geben Sie bitte die freizuschaltenden externen IP-Adressen ueber das Service-Desk des LRZ bekannt. SuperMUC: Scheduled Maintenance June 24-27

Dear users of the SuperMUC Petaflop system at LRZ, due to a scheduled maintenance the system will become temporarily unavailable for user operation from June 24, 8:00 am onward. Because we are preparing to improve the energy efficiency of the system, calibration runs will need to be performed in addition to software updates. Therefore, this maintenance is expected to last four days. A list with the changes to the system software will be published via this document once ready. It s committed to promote the scientific research, technological development and higher education in engineering and environmental sciences in order to improve civil protection, public health and preservation of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. CIMA's founding Institutions are the National Civil Protection Department of Italy, the University of Genoa, and local Authorities. The mission Foundation has got from the founders is to observe the Earth relevant processes, to predict the scenarios generated by them, using science in the service of the protection of citizens and of the environment. The speech will address first the research needs and the innovative tools of a modern Civil Protection Agency, in the field of meteorological and hydrological hazards, in order to efficiently predict dangerous events. The implications of the climate change on predicting climatic extremes will be discussed: exchanging the space dimension with the time dimension in observing and modeling is the main reason of the DRIHM project and of the EXPRESS-HYDRO project. The advanced modeling of the weather impacts, as well as the brain observation and its dynamic modeling, are the two modern science fields in which field experts are more in need of the support from ICT research. Biography: Prof. Franco Siccardi is current President of CIMA Research Foundation * Past Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Genoa Expert in methods for reducing the effects of natural hazards - especially flooding - through weather forecasting, observing networks and satellite sensors. * Sergey Soloviev Medal of the European Geophysical Society of the year 2000 for the outstanding scientific contributions in the area of understanding and mitigation of natural hazards impact. From 1995 to 2001 and from 2006 to present appointed by the Office of the Prime Minister of Italy as member of the National Committee for Extreme Risks. * Presently coordinator of hydrometeo risk section of the committee. Since 1986 to 2005 leader of the research area on Strategies for the Mitigation of Natural Hazards Effects of the Italian Research Group for the Prevention of Hydrogeological Hazards. * From 2004 to 2011 principal investigator of the Opera Project, the Italian Space Agency research and demonstration program for the use of EO data in risk assessment and flood predictions. Since 2011 member of the OCSE expert group on the Global Risk Modeling initiative. Up to 2007 Chairman of Business Consortium COS (OT) Technology for the Earth Observation from Space. Call for proposals for PRACE Preparatory Access - incl. prototype Intel MIC hybrid cluster

Preparatory access is intended for testing and developing codes in order to prepare applications for PRACE Tier-0 project access. In particular, we would like to draw your attention to the Preparatory Access Type C which includes code development with support from PRACE experts. Further information are given on the PRACE web page: http:// www.prace-ri.eu/Call-Announcements The Preparatory Access Call is a rolling call, researchers can apply for access all year. There are no closing dates, proposals will be reviewed every third month. The next cutoff date is June 3rd, 2013, 11: 00 AM CEST.
